Most formal reports are written in third person. In reflective reports you use a mixture of first and third person. First person to write about your experience and plans, and third person when relating theory to a general aspect of your work.

The introduction sets the context of your claim:-

1. Introduction

My professional development plan relates to my work at Now and Never, a fashion house in Timbucktoo. I have worked there for five years as an assistant and I shall be applying for the management training scheme next year, so my Professional Development Plan is related to the company’s development strategies. I note below how theories of management and leadership have influenced my person development. I start with….….

OR

The reflective report is divided into X sections for Task 1 and Task 2. In Task 1. I have organised the report into X sections, starting with the introduction to my work experience then moving on to how I feel leadership and management theories have influenced my decision making and can be applied to my previous experience. Section X then offers my professional development plan.

Task 1

1.1. Summary of my work experience and career goals

I want to work in the X business sector, so I have been working on developing my knowledge and skills to enable me to apply for work in X. I studies XX on my first degree and worked in a number of different jobs, but my ambition has always been to be a XX. My professional development plan has been produced to help me reach this goal. I have attached the plan in Section X. I believe I have been influenced by theories of professional leadership and management in a number of different ways.

1.2. Management development

I read the recommended reading from Week 1 and found that the ideas of X… resonated with my experience. X states that a good manager should….I believe this to be reasonable, but when things go wrong…. In the workshop exercises, I found that my management skills were effective in X but not as much so in Y or Z. This was because in X I xxxx While I felt the theory by B was helpful, in my work in X I realised theory Y was perhaps my important. However, a the time I was not consciously aware of the theoretical underpinnings to my decision making. In the workshop task ?, I realised that …..

1.3. Leadership

I think leaders arise out of the situation they are in. For example….

In terms of my own leadership skills

1.3. Strategic decision making (can be combined with management and leadership discussion)

1.4/5/6 HRM etc….heading for other topics

Keep numbering the paragraphs then offer a summary then lead into the Professional Development Plan (attach it in the Appendix) as you must link Task 1 –theory to practice, with Task 2 practice to theory.

Remember we have two more weeks of topics after the Christmas break.

We explore the Professional Development Plan in more detail after the holiday.

Week 10 - Both workshops this week are related to checking the assignment, so you can bring a full draft and we will look at it together. Please be advised it is not possible for me to comment on your work via. Email.
