Tips for Composing a Three-Part Thesis on your Burning Bright Story

TIPS > Once you pick a short story from  Burning Bright and a research topic, you need to develop it into a three-part thesis statement written in one complete sentence. The best and strongest place to put your thesis statement is the last sentence of the introductory paragraph in your Research Paper. To show you how to develop a research topic into a three-part thesis statement, let’s consider this  sample topic for the short story “Hard Times.” The research topic is: The significance of the town name Goshen Cove. ( DO NOT USE this example.)

Here is a sample three-part thesis statement for this topic:

In the short story “Hard Times,” the meaning of the town name Goshen Cove is ironic because point 1 + point 2 + point 3.

In this example, the subject of the thesis is the short story “Hard Times” plus the significance of the town name Goshen Cove. The writer’s opinion or theory is that it is ironic (i.e. contradictory to the harsh reality of the story). Your thesis statement must communicate a definite opinion, position, or theory. The three discussion points should list three ways that the town name is ironic, such as: poverty, hunger, and desperation. The three points should be listed in order of importance, from weakest to strongest. Based on this, a three-part thesis sentence could read:

In the short story “Hard Times,” the meaning of the town name Goshen Cove is ironic because the community lives in poverty, hunger, and desperation.

DO NOT USE this example. This is an example to show you how to write a three-part thesis statement and to inspire you to create your own.
