This is the Title of Your Research Package: Centered with No Extra Spaces

Begin with a one-paragraph review of your topic of exploration, listing some of the

research (from films and articles on Canvas) you examined to help set up and support your

argument. End with your argument (your thesis statement) and how research will support it. The

paragraph should be seven or more sentences. Avoid using the first (I) or second (you) person.

Then, beginning in the next paragraph, present the pros and cons of your argument.

The next paragraph examines the Point. You have already provided a brief overview of

your argument or the controversy in the paragraph above. Now, expound on your Point, moving

from strongest to weakest or weakest to strongest support; but build your case logically. Work to

smoothly incorporate support from the source outline. As you move through the Counter Point

and Rebuttal, make your argument strong. You should work to make your Synthesis as

balanced as possible. Make sure to cite all references (someone’s idea you present in the essay),

indirect quotes (changing some of the author’s words), and direct quotes (copying exactly and

using quotation marks) according to the new MLA citation style (an example is on Canvas under

the Course Outline and Syllabus). You must use the Point, Counter Point, Rebuttal, Synthesis,

Conclusion formula to structure this essay, but do not use those terms to section off your

argument; delete the headings and present one smooth essay. You should have four body

paragraphs (after the introduction) presenting your Point, Counter Point, Rebuttal, and

Synthesis. Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence and be supported by cited

evidence. Make sure transition sentences take you from one paragraph to the next.

Your Conclusion should wrap up your argument in a paragraph by restating the main

evidence. Mention one or two points that countered your argument, but (with evidence) explain

them away. End your last paragraph with a profound statement about the state of affairs

concerning your topic. Follow your essay with a Works Cited page.
