The Three Sisters – Robin Kimmerer Q&Q Response
The Three Sisters – Robin Kimmerer
Q&Q Response
Your assignment for the agriculture module is a Q&Q (Quotation and Questions) article response on Robin Kimmerer's essay entitled, "The Three Sisters" from her book, Braiding Sweetgrass.
Your assignment is to: 1) Quote (actually copy the passage into your response and then write about it below...) several interesting, intriguing, confusing, or insightful quotations, and then try to 2) Explain their meaning in your own words; 3) Make connections to other ideas or topics from our class (or things you want to bring into our class); and 4) Pose some critical questions about the passage and 5) Try to offer a couple answers to your questions.
This article is another nice companion to the agriculture chapters we are just finishing, and pairs well with her “Corn Tastes Better on the Honor System” essay. Both articles explore similar themes, but the focus in “The Three Sisters” is more focused on the Indigenous traditions and worldview. We will have some time to talk about this article and your Q&Qs response, so please be prepared and upload your response to the dropbox folder by the due date and time. I'm giving you a week to read (and re-read) and think about the essay, so you should have plenty of time to think and write...make sure your response does the essay credit by exploring some of its important ideas at length and by thinking about the ideas here in the context of how we can apply this type of knowledge and thinking to a more sustainable modern food system in the 21st century (think about the extractive vs. regenerative framework).
