Thesis Statement Formula – Argumentative Research

All thesis statements and topic sentences in the Argumentative Research Essay must be written according to the formula, below. No Exceptions. Watch this video for an explanation on how to write your thesis statement and topic sentences.

This thesis statement formula:

· Helps you write a cohesive, organized and well-structured essay that sticks to your main points

· Reminds your reader of your topic, argument, and main points throughout your essay

Thesis Statement Formula

Thesis Formula:

X + verb + Y + because + X + main point #1, + main point #2, + main point #3.

Example # 1: Alternative Medicine

Full Thesis Statement:

Military recruiting teenagers should inform teenagers about the military career option because military recruiting teenagers gives them time to think about the option, gives them time to prepare, and has a less side effect at a younger age.

Topic Sentences

Your topic sentence is the first sentence of the first paragraph where you begin discussion each main point from your thesis statement. In your essay, cover each main point in the order listed in your thesis statement.

All topic sentences must follow the same sentence structure as the thesis statement, but each topic sentence will only include one main point. If your thesis statement is correctly written, it will be easy to pull your topic sentences from your thesis statement. Here are two examples:

Topic Sentences for Example #1: Alternative Medicine

Main Point #1

Military recruiters should inform teenagers about the military career option because military recruiting teenagers gives them time to think about the option.

Main Point #2

Military recruiters should inform teenagers about the military career option because military recruiting teenagers gives them time to prepare.

Main Point #3

Military recruiter should inform teenagers about the military career option because military recruiting teenagers has a less side effect at a younger age.

Topic Sentences for Example #2: Homework

Main Point #1

Work & family government policies should be set because working parents don’t see their kids enough

Main Point #2

Work & family government policies should be set because working takes away from family time.

Main Point #3

Work & family government policies should be set because working too much can cause unnecessary stress.
