Issue: How does the poem Still I Rise challenge the oppression of African American women

during a time of racism and misogyny.

Thesis statement: Maya Angelou uses this poem as her platform to empower blacks, especially

black women, in a time where they were often mistreated, oppressed and often overlooked as she

breaks the chains of not only slavery, but also the bounds of her personal hardships through early

adulthood.
