Visual Elements for Essay #4 Visual Analysis/Argument
The Seven Visual Elements: Color/Texture/Line/Space/Form/Shape/Value
Color : Color is produced when light strikes an object and is reflected back to the eye.
Properties of color—hue (general colors), intensity (saturation), lightness (tints)/darkness (shades).
Texture : Texture describes either the way a three-dimensional work actually feels when touched, or the visual "feel" of a two-dimensional work.
Actual texture: tactile, more than visual information
Visual texture: the illusion of texture --trompe l'oeil ("fool the eye") to create a realistic illusion of texture and depth in a work of art.
Subversive texture: using texture in ways that are unexpected.
Line: referring to a continuous mark, made on a surface, by a moving point.
define a space, create an outline or pattern, imply movement or texture and allude to mass or volume.
Types of line: contour, actual, implied
Space: refers to distances or areas around, between or within components of a piece.
Types: positive (white or light) or negative (black or dark), open or closed, shallow or deep and two-dimensional or three-dimensional.
Form: a three-dimensional geometrical figure (i.e.: sphere, cube, cylinder, cone, etc.)
Shape: an enclosed space (two-dimensional or flat), the boundaries of which are defined by other elements of art (i.e.: lines, colors, values, textures, etc.).
Value: lightness or darkness of a color.
CHIAROSCURO - a formula and pattern used to approximate light projected on a three-dimensional surface.
DESCRIPTIVE AND EXPRESSIVE PROPERTIES OF VALUE - the use of value to create an emotional message in a work of art.
The Four Persuasive Appeals: Logos/Pathos/Ethos/Kairos
Logos= appeal to logic, facts, & reason
1. Logos as an appeal to our desire for “hard evidence
2. Logos as an appeal to general reason
Pathos=shared value and emotions
1. Pathos as appeals to shared values.
2. Pathos as appeals to emotion
Ethos=character & credibility
1. Ethos as an attempt to establish credibility. This is an attempt to appeal to readers’ trust of authority.
2. Ethos as an attempt to establish one’s own credibility by drawing on the authority of others. This appeal works in two ways: first, by demonstrating that your argument is credible because you are not the only one who thinks this way and second, because the people who agree with you are authorities.
Kairos=time & place
1. Kairos as an appeal to time. Many arguments are possible because of the historic time in which they are made.
2. Kairos as an appeal to place. Sometimes the location of the argument adds to its persuasive effects
