Assignment Instructions

Step 1: Identify a current policy (a policy implemented within the last 10 years) that you and/or others at your agency recognize as impacting (positively or negatively) your internship's area of practice (e.g., a policy impacting healthcare, public schools, housing, immigration, etc. for the client population served).

Step 2: Write a paper that includes a minimum of two in-text citations / references *and* addresses the key items (see green font below) regarding your selected current policy:

1. Identify the Policy: Provide the name of the policy, year it was implemented, the sponsors of the policy, and the purpose of the policy

2. Describe the Broad Policy Impact: In reviewing the policy, describe what the policy is intended to do and who the policy impacts throughout society (think bigger than your agency) - be sure to cite the sources of your information

3. Describe the Agency-level Policy Impact: Review the policy with your supervisor and obtain feedback from your supervisor on how they see the policy impacting the clients/services at your agency. Summarize this feedback in your paper

4. Identify Next Steps: Conclude the paper by identifying next steps for advocacy (for or against) you would suggest or engage in to either promote the continuation or discontinuance of the policy. Give rationale for your advocacy efforts (i.e. why would you engage in these specific "next steps" that you identified)
