Title (Tentative)

Introduce the research topic in one or two paragraphs. The introduction sets the context for your proposed research and must capture the reader's interest. An introduction provides the direction to the reader by taking them from a general subject to a specific area of your research. It should be clear in this paragraph what two disciplines you will be relating to your topic. Be sure to include the current state of knowledge and any recent debates on the topic. You must justify your research by including recent, scholarly, peer-reviewed sources to support each assertion.

Note: Lead up to the research problem, but do not describe the research problem or purpose in the introduction as these belong in later sections.

Statement of the Problem

Articulation of a concise problem statement is the key to a successful proposal and typically may require revisions. Include appropriate published or relevant sources to document the existence of a problem. In other words, it is not a problem simply because you think it is a problem, it must be supported by your preliminary reading/research.

Note: Ensure that the concepts presented in the problem statement lead to and align directly with the purpose statement.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose statement should be a concise paragraph that describes the intent of the study and it should flow directly from the problem statement, specifically address the reason for conducting the study and reflect toward research questions.

Research Questions

Before listing the research questions, introductory information should be presented in a discussion context. The research questions are to be distinct and answerable, given the time and resources available in this course. These should be “How” or “Why” questions and you should not already know the answer. List one or two research questions.

Study Significance

The proposal should demonstrate the originality of your intended research. You should therefore explain why your research is important (for example, by explaining how your research builds on and adds to the current state of knowledge in the field or by setting out reasons why it is timely to research your proposed topic).

Conclusion 

Conclude your proposal by summarizing the key points. This should be a clear and concise snapshot of the entire proposal.
