The Proposal

ENGL 1102

GSU-Alpharetta

Prof. Jenkins

The Proposal

Your opportunity to run your research paper idea by me:

Problem

Solution

Audience

Writer’s role

Short (four sections, about 400 words)

Highly formulaic (some of the same language)

Relatively easy to write

“Hermione’s purse” of assignments

Sample proposal

Posted on iCollege (see “Content” page)

Might want to print it off and follow along as you listen to this audio lecture

Based on the essay, “Online Classes and College Completion,” linked to the syllabus (week of April 6)

Note that I did it backwards, but still....

Four paragraphs, or sections

Problem

Solution(s)

Rhetorical situation

Research

Problem section

About 90-120 words (no more)

Lays out the problem

Answers some or all of the ”journalism” questions:

How is this a problem?

Why is it a problem?

For whom is it a problem?

What is the scope of the problem?

Solution(s) section

About 90-120 words (no more)

Raises one or more possible solutions

Some problems only have one solution—usually, “stop doing that”—but most have more

Types of multi-solution papers:

Options

Program

Sub-problems

I’m not going to hold you strictly to what you say in this section: Do the best you can at this point. (Remember the Research section.)

Rhetorical Situation section

60-80 words

Specifically identifies

Audience

Writer’s role

Purpose

Highly formulaic language:

“My audience for this essay will be…(fill in the blank)”

“For the purposes of this essay, I will adopt the role of... (fill in the blank)”

“My purpose is to...(fill in the blank)”

Note that purpose = audience + solutions.

Research section

List three sources you expect to use in your essay

Any three sources, including a personal interview

If you’re not sure about solutions, you can use your research to find some

Again, I won’t hold you strictly to the sources you list here

Again, note formulaic language: “My research into this topic….” (See sample proposal)

Be sure to document your sources properly using MLA 8 style
