Biblical Research

ThePersonofJesus.docx

Students will select three biblical texts that all relate to a single theological issue. They will utilize the tools of biblical interpretation and consult biblical commentaries in order to present their own assessment of the theological issue.

Suggestions: Students are free to choose any topic related to Christian theology. Possible topics might address

· -  Salvation Outside of the Church

· -  Christian Social Teaching

· -  ReligiousFreedom

· -  InterreligiousRelations

· -  The Person of Jesus

A well prepared presentation of your chosen biblical texts will:

1. Identify the texts, providing quotes of key verses.

2. Offer your initial thoughts on the text. What did you first understand the passages to mean? What questions do you have about the text before you begin your research?

3. Relate your chosen passages to a theme of our course and our class discussions. How is this connected to the “big picture” of the Christian faith?

4. Consult 2 Biblical Commentaries.

5. Based on your research, pose a question for your classmates to discuss.

Present your findings from these commentaries. Do the two commentaries agree on their interpretation of your passages? Are there different views? If so, why? What have you learned about the text based on your research? Be sure to explain the types of analysis and interpretation that you have examined (consider the historical context, genre of the text, likely authors, cultural context, etc.).

A well-prepared Canvas post will be about 2-3 pages in a Word document single spaced.

These are the biblical texts I chose:

· Matthew 1:18

This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. NIV

· Matthew 1:21

"She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." NIV

· Matthew 5:17

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." NIV

· Matthew 7:7

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you."NIV
