The Observation Report

Your Observation Report (1,200-1,400 words, not including the Reference List) should address the elements incorporated into your Observation Proposal (as well as additional elements, as explained below). The Report should be presented in essay form (not as a list), and it is fine (but not required) to use headings, if you feel that will help with the organization of your report.  Please note that some important tips on conducting your Observation appear below.

Your Observation Report should include the following:

1. An introductory paragraph that explains to the reader what group/event you observed, as well an introduction to the key aspects of the report.

2. A paragraph about the organization (church, temple, center, etc.) sponsoring the service or event.   Please cite and include a reference for your information. (You can use and build on the information provided in your Proposal.)

3. A paragraph about the religion of which the organization/group is a part.  Please cite and include a reference for your information. (You can use and build on the information provided in your proposal.)

4. A 2-3 paragraph narrative that describes what you saw, what the environment was like, and what took place in the YouTube videos or Livestream sessions that you observed. Aim to provide meaningful and interesting details to give the reader a sense of what your experience was like.

5. Two paragraphs that relate what you learned to the two theories/concepts discussed in your Proposal.

6. A paragraph that relates what you learned to the Pew Research Center article in your Proposal.

7. A paragraph that relates what you learned to at least one other Learning Resource in our course from weeks 3-6.

8. A paragraph or two that reflects upon your experience of the rituals or service of another religion. Did the  project  broaden your ability to dialogue across religious differences?  Or, how did the project affect you personally; how did you feel about it? What was most difficult for you in this project, and why? If you had to do this assignment again, how might you try to address that difficulty?

9. Conclusion.

10. Reference list.

Your report must include a title, an introduction, a conclusion, and a reference list.  Word count should be at least 1,200 words, not including the reference list.

The Observation Report maps to the following:

Apply major sociological theories to the study of religion in order to demonstrate the influence of religion on personal, societal and professional environments.

· Evaluate the influence of multiple social locations (race, class, gender, sexuality) on religious beliefs and attitudes in order to enhance awareness and respect of one’s personal beliefs and values relative to those of others.

· Analyze multiple religious beliefs, current religious conflicts, and controversies to propose realistic solutions using awareness, appreciation of diversity, and global multicultural perspectives.
