Analysis Essay
ENGL 1302

Essay 3: Analysis: Writing About Literature
Directions: For your final short essay, you are to write a literary analysis discussing either
symbols or themes from one of the following short stories: “A Rose for Emily,” “The Cask of
Amontillado,” “The Necklace,” or “The Lottery.” For the story you choose to write about, you
need to analyze a minimum of three symbols OR three themes from the story—do not do both
symbols AND themes. For this assignment, you need a minimum of three sources: one primary
source, which is the story being analyzed, and two secondary sources, which are critical works
written about the primary source. Do not use any of the following sources to write this essay:
Wikipedia, ClassicNote, SparkNotes, or other so-called cheat sites. These are not scholarly
sources. Instead, use information from the library’s literary databases, such as the GVRL, which
includes Short Stories for Students. Your essay must utilize direct quotations from both the
primary and secondary sources written in MLA format and must have an MLA-format works
cited page. The essay needs to be 2 full to 3 pages in length—the works cited page does NOT
count as part of the essay length requirement. As always, the essay needs to contain an
introductory paragraph (be sure to name the story and its author), body paragraphs, and a
conclusion. Your audience is your college English professor.
