Individual ACTIVITY & Discussion using Concepts from our Textbook: Marshmallow Report
The Marshmallow Challenge Read and Complete This Entire Assignment
Do this challenge before entering the Discussion Board.
Gather the following materials together:
20 sticks of spaghetti
1 yard (36 inches) of plain masking tape
1 yard of string that you can break with your hand or have scissors handy
1 regular size (not jumbo) marshmallow
Measuring tape
A timer
A camera to take and upload a final picture of your completed structure
1. Gather three or four of your good friends or family (over the age of 10 years) and prepare to
work as a team. They must be committed to work with you for a minimum of 18 minutes.
2. Gather at a table to work together. Set the materials together on the table. Set the timer for 18
minutes (not more or less).
3. Your job is to build the tallest free standing (it cannot be leaning on anything) structure that
the team can create in 18 minutes using these materials. The marshmallow must be on the top
and cannot be cut or eaten to half.
4. You have exactly 18 minutes to complete this task. Set your timer and stop at exactly 18
minutes.
5. Stop! At the end of 18 minutes take a picture of what you have created (or not created-it’s ok
be honest!) and go to the Discussion Forum to post this picture to the discussion board with
your report (questions requested on this discussion forum assignment). The questions are not
tricky in any way but I want you to do the experience without thinking about the questions so
don’t enter the board until you are done with the challenge. After you have posted your
report-look at other team picture and their posted process.
6. Respond to two of your classmates experiences and tell them what you think may have made
a difference in their process or the success or failure of their structure. We are all going to
have different structures so don’t be shy-we can learn from each other.
