The Final – The Project As president and CEO of Hazards International, LLC, you have been contracted to prepare a brief for the governing body (mayor and city council) of one of the following global cities:
1. Mexico City, Mexico 2. Chittagong, Bangladesh 3. Tehran, Iran 4. Tokyo, Japan 5. Manila, Philippines
The brief should provide both an introduction to the range of hazards faced by the city and should include a focus on what you deem to be the most pressing hazard. Importantly, this means that your report will have two fundamental parts – 1) an overview of all the potential natural hazards, drawn from reputable sources, (for these cities there is more than one hazard, make sure you discuss all of them) 2) an analysis of what you think most important hazard and potential ideas for mitigation or survival. The former will be largely research, but the latter should include a unique effort on your part to evaluate some aspect of the hazard like we have done in class (sources and travel times of tsunami, the potential paths a lahar could take and what population centers are in the way, or the potential inundation zones resulting from a large storm surge, for example). This will be a written report and should be a ~1500-2000 word report, well organized and richly illustrated. Make sure you cover all of the important issues, identify the scale of the problem (numbers of people affected, or timing available for evacuation etc.), and make some definitive statements about the most likely situations. Please be sure to provide a reference list of any and all sources, and remember to use in-text citations appropriately. Details:
1. You may choose to work in groups, with a maximum of 3 per group. Please note that my expectations for the scope and depth of the analysis will rise with group work. Group grades are shared.
2. Reports must be handed in on paper. Term projects will not be accepted by email.
DUE Wednesday, June 12 (during finals period) between 11 am and noon. Please deliver your project to Wilkinson Hall 202 during that time. Our final exam slot is 9:30-11:30 am that day so you should be free. If for some reason everyone in your group cannot make that time, please contact Dr. Stanley in advance.
