The media has affected nurses in many ways from low admissions in colleges to mistreatment and low pay despite the importance of their work throughout the healthcare system. The importance of nurses cannot be disputed. Not only do nurses have to step up and improve their stereotypes, but society as a whole need to step up and see nurses for who they really are as well.

3

Current Relevance

Helps understand the public perception of nursing through:

Inconsistent portrayals of nursing in the media and on the internet

Patients' personal experiences

The treatment of other professionals.

Gender role expectations

4

The media rarely depicts nurses giving care outside of the hospital, such as at community clinics, outpatient facilities, or in the patient's own residence. Instead, they are frequently depicted as medical assistants rather than the highly trained independent practitioners we know and respect them to be.

4

Current Relevance Continued

Since nurses are being viewed negatively by the public many aspect are affected:

Relationship with patients

Interprofessional relationship

Interprofessional collaboration is reduced making it more difficult to provide optimal care for patients

Because nurses have been portrayed in a negative light, they are not receiving the deserved respect from the medical community and thus it causes a distress to the patient's care.

5

Clinical Practice Integration

Develop pride in the profession.

Maintain a professional appearance

Display professional behaviors in the workplace

Push for more nursing accomplishments to be boasted over to the public eye

Most importantly, nurses' own perceptions of themselves can have a significant impact on their own well-being and productivity. Negative perceptions about the profession might affect everything it does or wants to do. This includes professional behavior.

Reforming priorities, institutions, organizations, financing, and the regulatory environment are all examples of policy reforms that can be applied to programs and practices

Conclusion

The public's perception of nursing has been skewed by the media's portrayal at times as a terrible profession.

This had an effect on the way nurses interacted with patients and their families, as well as how much work they were required to do as a result of this.

Through reforms and public education of nurse's professions it becomes possible to change the perception of nurses

Nurses' professional identity was found to be influenced by their work environment and work ideals in seven different studies. It's important for nurses to learn from their experiences in the workplace, and this is especially true when it comes to their interactions with their coworkers.
