Eastern Gorilla

The Abstract

This paper aims at providing an in-depth study at the largest primate in the world, the Eastern Gorilla, or Gorilla beringei (Gorilla-World 2014). It is the enormous gorilla among the existing four subspecies of gorilla. This species has a stocky body, short muzzle, with large hands. The eastern gorillas live by fruits and herbaceous foods. Its fur is always black, but the adult gorillas that are male have a silvery saddle on the back. Its maximum lifespan is unknown, and it is capable of making to 40 years. They have no specific season for breeding, and its female usually gives birth after every three to four years. The new feed from their mothers for 3.5 years (Gorilla-World 2014). They have a generation time of 18.2 years meant for the females and 20.4 years meant for the males. They live under cohesive and stable families, whose leader is always the silverback male. The male usually offers protection to their females and children through their large, intimidating displays that involve chest beating and charging. This species has 32 teeth that include specialized teeth meant for grinding, cutting, and milling. It falls in kingdom Animalia, phylum Chordata, Class Mammalia, order Primates, and family Hominidae (Gorilla-World 2014). The major threats faced by the eastern gorillas include the loss of habitat, poaching, diseases, rapid changes in climate, and civil unrest. This animal has a lifecycle that is the same to other mammals, and its skeleton has a unique adaptation for food sources.

Introduction

The scientific name of this animal is Gorilla beringei. Its common name is

Eastern Gorilla in English, Gorilla de l'Est in French, and Gorilla Oriental in Spanish. These serve as the name that most people know. This organism resides in Africa, specifically found in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Virunga National Park (Wildscreen Arkive 2018). This gorilla can also be located in the Volcano National Park in Rwanda or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda.

Body

Eastern gorilla is critically endangered species. It is the most significant type of gorilla. It has a dark coat that contains shaggy fur. The adult gorilla has a silvery saddle on its back, which turns grey in old age. This animal has a broad chest with very long arms. Its body is stocky with a short muzzle (Gorilla-World 2014). It has a large head with a flat nose that has large nostrils. A mature male eastern gorilla can go up to 1.7m tall and can weigh 160 kg while the female one can go up to 1.5m tall with 90 kg. It has four limbs that are used to walk with on knuckles and sole that is on its feet.

An eastern male gorilla can reproduce at the age of 8-12 years. They are armed as blackbacks at 12 years, and they attain full adult size at the age of 15 years. The occurrence of the female menarche takes place at 6-7 years, which is followed by sterile adolescence period (Wildscreen Arkive 2018). The first parturition occurs at 9.9 years. The eastern female gorillas have a reproductive cycle of 28 days, and they become receptive for 1-4 days during the close time of ovulation. The young eastern gorilla weans at 3-4 years. The female gives birth every 3-4 years and always produce 3-4 surviving offspring during the lifespan for reproduction (Gorilla-World 2014). The maximum lifespan of this animal is undetermined though it can live up to 40 years the generation time for the female is 18.2 years, while that of the male is 20.4 years.

This animal has a skeleton that adapts to hold the weight of its body. It has muscle shoulders, neck, arm, and back, which makes it possible for providing six times strength higher than human beings offer. It contains a sagittal crest that carries the strong jaw muscles that play an important role in chewing tough vegetables. It has 32 teeth that include specialized teeth used to mill, grind, and cut food. Eastern gorilla falls in kingdom Animalia, phylum Chordata, Class Mammalia, order Primates, and family Hominidae (Gorilla-World 2014).

The primate order that it falls under contains 500 different species. The family Hominoidea came into existence about 25 million years ago. The closest animals that serve as the relative to the eastern gorilla is the chimpanzee. The subspecies found under eastern gorilla split about 400,000 years past. This animal is an endangered species, and for this reason, its population dropped by 70% of the first generation (Gorilla-World 2014). The major threats that the eastern gorilla faces include, the loss of habitat, poaching, diseases, rapid changes in climate, and civil unrest. People tend to capture and kill the eastern gorillas for specific reasons illegally. This animal loses habitat because of the destruction by human force and the climatic weather condition. Civil unrests cause the rise in the number of refugees, which demands to resettle, where the eastern gorilla’s habitat is destroyed for human settlement. Diseases and climatic changes affect the lives heath and lives of the eastern gorillas (Gorilla-World 2014).

Conclusion

The eastern gorilla resides in Africa, and it is critically endangered. Its skeleton has a unique adaptation on the food sources and the habitat. It has a lifecycle that is similar to the lifecycle of other mammals. The evolvement of this animal took part 25 million years ago.
