STEP 1 Read the text annotating passages that strike you. Annotation means that you write down words that catch your attention - or sentences or passages that interest or confuse you. You may also make comments if there is something you would like to say in response to the text. You may even want to write a short summary of the text in order to remember the content. For this process to work, you must complete this step while you read the text for the first time. Annotations may be in your textbook.

STEP 2 Make a personal connection with the text. Explain what in your own life the text reminds you of.

STEP 3 Take a few minutes and review the annotations you made. Of the parts of the text you annotated, which are the most powerful? Make a list of just those words, phrases, sentences or longer passages that particularly resonated with you (annotations may be text you liked or text you strongly disliked).

STEP 4 Now write a short paragraph about the text as a whole. You may confirm, appreciate, argue, express frustration with what the author said, but explain why you feel the way you do.

Your original response should be at least 250 words and include at least 3 direct quotes.
