The rise of Rome in Virgil’s Narrative The Aeneid
The Aeneid is my favorite text because is a classical narrative telling the story about the foundation of Rome from the ashes of Troy. The whole piece is named after a Trojan hero Aeneas who was a son of a Trojan aristocrat. War survivors are led by Aeneas through the Mediterranean to reach the place they would live for their future which is Rome. The fall of Troy is at the beginning of the narrative. The survivors who are warriors of the war sail on the Trojan fleet but have to endure the storms of the Mediterranean Sea. The storm is sent by the queen of gods, Juno who is not on good terms with the Trojans. Juno seeks to revenge for the injustices done on her by the leader of the Trojans, Aeneas. It is made clear that Aeneas descendants will destroy Carthage, which is Dido’s favorite city. The Trojans are almost losing it when the sea god Neptune rescues them and guided the Trojan fleet to the shore.
I like how Aeneas describes the story about the fall of Troy and the manipulations bringing a giant horse left by the Greeks into their city which had Greek soldiers in it who sneaked out in the night letting Greek soldiers in. After the destruction of Troy, the Trojan survivors have been sailing since then. Aeneas describes how hard they fought to save the city but it was not possible. Aeneas was able to get his father and son safe out of Troy but his wife disappeared. The ghost of his wife told him to find a new queen in Italy. All the survivors then flee to the neighboring Thrace and attempt to settle there. The Trojan survivors are challenged by things like Plagues and queen of the sea before reaching their land of destiny which was Rome. The Queen of Carthage, causes tragedy in several scenes a good example being the romance and sexual liaison with the Trojan leader. This happens after Dido gets impressed by Aeneas and his feats making her develop a feeling for him.
Juno reminds Aeneas of his fate and duty. Aeneas's fate of leaving makes Dido feel uncomfortable because she even foresees her death. The Trojans stop at Sicily for anniversary celebrations of the deceased father of their leader, Aeneas. On their sail, they have to fight unfavorable winds. The Trojan ship is set on fire something that shakes their leader until the father's spirit comes and tells him to sail to Italy to meet him in the underworld.
On arrival in Italy, the leader receives prophesies about where the doors to the underworld were. Aeneas is guided on how to get to the underworld. The Trojans meet many spirits before reaching the area they could settle. Juno is always fighting Aeneas who gathers enemies to attack the Trojans. The climax of the narrative is when Turnus the prince Pallas ignites rage over Aeneas. All efforts to attack the Trojans again are not successful because they are assisted by gods.
