What is the capstone?
An original product created by you during this final course of your BSN degree
Culmination of all you have learned, applied to this final project
You will use 4 assessments to research and create your original product
You will use 1 final assessment to discuss the impact of your product
Each assessment must be done in order
Your instructor will work with you and must approve your product before you can implement it
You will devote at least 9 hours of clinical practicum to the development and implementation of your product
These hours will be spent with experts, peers, and target population. The hours will be logged into CORE ELMS
What is the product?
Your product can consist of many things
Some possible ideas
A disease specific educational intervention
A policy intervention and change
A community outreach

How do I start?
First choose a topic of interest
What am I interested in?
Is there a health care issue that I would like to learn more about?
Is there a health care issue that I think others should learn more about?
Second choose a target population
Is there a particular patient that I would like to work with?
Could my peers use some guidance on a health care topic?
Is there a community resource or gathering site that I could help teach a health topic to?
This will be the focus of assessment 1
First you will explore your topic of interest and your target population
You will review the latest evidence on your topic of interest and the implications for nursing practice
You will explore your state board nurse practice act to determine your legal duties in regards to this health problem
You will review leadership strategies which you can undertake to have an impact on the health care issues of your choosing
I have my topic and target population, now what?
This will be the focus of assessment 2
Every health care professional must know the impact of any health care issue
The safety impact
The cost impact
The quality impact
How can you, as a professional nurse make a difference?
What does your state board say?
How does your chosen topic of interest impact
Your patient?
Your peers?
Your community?
What are some EB strategies that you can do to have an impact on these elements?
The key word here is YOU
The strategies discussed must be something you can actually do
Next up: Technology
Technology is an ever advancing science
As professional nurses, it is your responsibility to stay on top of the technological advances in health care
This is the focus of assessment 3
You have defined your problem of interest, determined its impact on your target population, discussed possible strategies to make a positive difference, now…
What technology is in existence that will help your make a difference in your health care issue for your target population?
Examples:
Diabetes: is there something new you could teach a patient about
Community Health awareness: is there some new free apps or websites that you could inform the community about?
Is there some technology that you could use to speak to the masses? Or create an educational in-service?
How can YOU use this technology in YOUR product?
The product
You have told me the problem of interest and the target in A1
You have determined the impact of your problem in terms of safety, cost and quality in A2
You have discussed current technology that you could use to impact this problem in A3
So, what are you going to do?
This is the focus of A4
You will now tell your instructor what you plan to create for your target population and how you plan to implement in.
You will create your product and submit it with this assessment 4 so that you instructor may review it and approve it
Tell your instructor the leadership strategies you will undertake to see this product implemented
Propose your plan and use of tech to implement it.
Discuss the state board policies of your state and governmental policies that must be considered in the creation and implementation of your product
After the product
Once your instructor approves your product, you may implement it
You will take care in maintaining HIPPA laws if you work with an individual patient
You will explore the impact of your product by asking questions and having your target population evaluate your product
You will discuss all of this in assessment 5
After you implement and evaluate your product, you will reflect on all you have learned in this course and others in assessment 5

Tips for success
Speak with your peers, supervisors and experts to develop your product
Speak with your instructor whenever you are unsure
Log your time into CORE ELMS before you submit any assessment
Thoroughly review your scoring guide before you submit any assessment
Be sure each assessment follows ALL APA rules for formatting
Be creative!!!
