Textual analysis:

Introduction

Nowadays teens are immersed in social medias to a point that it changes their personality, the way they encounter life and behave. Having a son or a daughter is not an easy job, nobody says that, but we, parents or caregivers should do our best, in this case giving the freedom of using what development of technology can give us “Social Media” but with parental control.

Summary

This article is based on accurate information based most of all on research. The author bases his writing on making the audience understand the meaning of a few concepts like bullying, cyberbullying, sexting, Facebook depression, explaining with them how social media affects adolescents and teenagers brain in a positive or a negative way. He argues that all caregivers and parents should take control of what their son and daughter are publishing and looking on medias, giving at the same times freedom to fly in the world of social media.

Thesis

Suren Ramasubbu gives neutral arguments, it can be called neutral because he is not against social medias or for it, he just gives good points and bad points of it and at the same time he gives some advice, he based his article most of all on logos, and a little of pathos, neglecting ethos, citing many researches, and surveys.

Ethos

The writer doesn’t use ethos strategy. It seems like he is not interested in giving a good impression of himself, either receiving credits of his job, because he is interested more in making the audience being informed about the topic than about him. Even though he wrote his name at the beginning of his writing it looks as information and give you the opportunity to investigate a little bit more about him. This also is an indirect way of using ethos strategy though.

Pathos

He uses pathos with the intention of making the audience be conscious of how important or delicate is this topic, putting terms like “unpleasant emails and messages”, “vulnerable to such evils” that makes feeling of warnings emerge. The fact that he gives much information also contribute to feel a little bit more of realism of his writing. So, it can be inferred that logos strategy contribute to the formation feeling due to the data given.

Logos

The author inserts logos to give his point about why this group of children, teenagers, are the most vulnerable using statistics like “75 percent of teenagers currently have a profile on social networking sites” The intention of saying this is to be accurate how big is the topic of what he is explaining and with the object of making the audience interested on the data shown.

He gives two different reasons that make adolescents vulnerable to such evil, the object of using this metaphor is to enlarge the significance of the two point he is giving, which are the lack of self-regulation and the susceptibility to peer pressure.

The author uses a report by Common Sense Media to give a currently idea of how big is the importance of social media due to the percent of teenagers that use social medias like Facebook.

Also uses definitions made The American Psychological Association like bullying, cyberbullying. And a bunch of information given as survey to give his point and clearly expresses that the more percentage of teenagers use the social media the more cyberbullied are in some way.

The author expresses that cyberbullying is not topic to take easily is a delicate topic that if not taken with the necessary importance the consequences could be big like victims with medical intervention, and making the audience feel compassion, and at the same time conscious.

The author uses quotations to give the definition of “Facebook depression”, he cites many studies to give proof and veracity of the information exposed on the paper. The primary function of quotation marks is to set off and represent exact language (either spoken or written) that has come from somebody else.

Also introduced two different resources that differ in opinion to attract the attention of the audience, study showed that spending much time is social medias is an expression of what is called “Facebook Depression”, showing that comparisons is the main cause of social depression, and the other expresses the idea that Facebook makes users happier, increase the social trust and engagement among users, it expresses that our brain are wired to connect. These studies show the effect of social media cause in the users whether connections or comparisons. The interest of the writer in putting these two different opinions to draw the attention with the intention of making the audience think about it, and deliberate which opinion is the right one.

He underlined many structures throughout the paper to set proper titles apart from regular text, bring importance to names, draw emphasis. Examples of this are Facebook depression, sexting, and cyberbullying, 13 % of surveyed…, According to a report by Common Sense Media, stopbullying.gov, The national Council on Crime Prevention, and some many others.

The author makes inferences on another risk of the use of social medias sharing to much information, and the feeling of being disconnected from the real life. He is describing the feeling of a user after spending much time on the social media expressing this he makes more real the understanding of what happened to the user, and facilitate that the idea is going straight forward to the point he wants.

Conclusions

I agree with the author opinion in that social media can give us much as we know how to use it in a regulated way. What I have notice since social media has been in use is that the way we use it can be determinant in our lives, as easy as that, we can be losing time instead of studying, or working, the user can make an addiction on checking it much more frequently than we can imagine even almost the all day, so this is not good neither for eyes, health, nor brain.
