Textual (Image) Analysis
For this assignment, you will analyze an image of your choosing. You will include the image as a part of the
assignment. (see Berry's "Free to Be an Individual" essay)
This assignment is not merely a presentation of an image; it is an argument about the image. Your paper should consider key features of a
textual analysis. For the context of this assignment, any image that can be analyzed is text.
Consider the difference between the following statements:
The man in the Dos Equis ad is in the center of the picture, and there is a woman on each side of him. This is what
we can see.
The man, “The Most Interesting Man in the World,” is positioned between two women who are smiling at him. The
look on his face gives the impression that he may not be as enthralled with them as they are with him. Perhaps he does
not have to pretend to be engaged. As the center of attention, he and his choice of beer, Dos Equis, signify status and
power. These things are not all visible; they are a writer’s interpretation basis for an argument.
Certain key features should be present in your paper:
• A title
• An introduction with a clear argumentative thesis
• Summary of the text
• Context and interpretation of the text
• Support for your interpretation
