This last spring, the Senate confirmed Neil Gorsuch to the United States Supreme Court. They did this by ending the filibuster for judicial nominees, which goes back to your "Supermajority" assignment from a few weeks ago. In a way Justice Gorsuch adds some diversity to the Court. He is only 49 years old. He is from Colorado and is Protestant. Still, the Court is not that diverse or representative of the United States as a whole. The Court now has six male and three female justices. One justice is African American, and one is Latina; five justices are Roman Catholics, three are Jewish, and only Justice Gorsuch is Protestant. The average age is 67. Every current justice has an Ivy League education. None of them went to state schools. None are from the midwest. Most went straight from law school to clerking for the Supreme Court to large firms or government work. Very few have criminal or family law experience. Keep in mind that the Supreme Court decides law that affects everyone. So the question is: Do you care about the makeup of the Supreme Court? Would you do anything to increase diversity, and if so how? Should the Court have more diversity in terms of background, education, religion, etc. or should none of that matter? Why or why not?
