Test #1: Written portion

Due Jul 3 by 11:59pm Points 60 Submitting a file upload File Types doc., docx, and pdf Available Jul 2 at 6am - Jul 26 at 8:15pm 25 days

This assignment was locked Jul 26 at 8:15pm.

Please answer EACH of the following questions in the format specified. You must answer all of these for maximum credit consideration.

Short answers/short essays should generally be three to four paragraphs (as per the instructions for each question). The paragraph lengths are guidelines, but these guidelines do assume a minimum of several sentences/paragraph, and variations in source use and writing style will mean that lengths may vary.

Do not use any outside sources--use only the resources provided/assigned within the course and Launchpad. You are welcome to use primary sources from within the Launchpad that I did not specifically assign or require. Please be sure to cite your sources clearly and consistently, in accordance with the guidelines and instructions provided from the Intro Module forward. Neglecting to cite your sources will result in a zero score.

DUE DATE/TIME: This is due by 11:59 p.m. PT on Fri., 7/3. At midnight, it is late and the syllabus policies will be applied (no exceptions).

FORMATTING AND SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

Please submit one document file, with your name, section number, and the date in an upper corner. Use standard formatting--Times New Roman font with 12-point type size, normal font type (not bold), and 1-inch margins. Do NOT submit as a page, jpeg, etc.--this MUST be submitted as a document file in MS Word, pdf, or its Mac equivalent. If your work does not meet these requirements, it will be returned and a substantial point penalty will be applied. Please number each response (matching the question number of the pormpt), but do not include the prompt (question), as this skews the Turnitin report and increases grading time for the entire class.

***PLEASE REVIEW THE GRADING RUBRIC FOR SPECIFIC SOURCE USE REQUIREMENTS AS WELL AS WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR A STRONG SCORE FOR EACH RESPONSE.***

AGAIN, PLEASE ANSWER ALL OF THESE IN ONE FILE. PLEASE NUMBER THEREPONSES AS YOU ANSWER THEM. DO NOT USE ANY OUTSIDE SOURCES (THOSE NOT SPECIFICALLY PROVIDED WITHIN THE COURSE OR LAUNCHPAD.) KINDLY PROOFREAD AND BE SURE TO CITE YOUR SOURCES.

1) SHORT ESSAY--20 points. Three or more paragraphs. Using the numerous resources on this topic (primary sources in the reader/Launchpad and in Module 2, instructor-provided resources, textbook), discuss the major reasons why the witch hysteria largely impacted women AND why it concentrated in certain regions/areas. What specific factors led to the decline and eventual end of this in the Western world? Be specific, and please review the grading rubric.

Extra credit may be considered for exemplary responses that include a specific, well- defined argument and extraordinary source support (not just number of sources, but effectiveness).

2) SHORT ESSAY--20 points. Three to four (or more) paragraphs. Let's engage sources from the Enlightenment --specifically those related to concepts of free will, consent to be governed, and responsibilities of rulers--to the situation we face in our society and world today. First, please watch this video (https://mashable.com/video/trevor-noah-dr-fauci-coronavirus-misinformation/? fbclid=IwAR0hWCLEy1AOHkZDJNhV18YOkm8grYH98wiQMbp-COmozbT7hbLRD2TluAY) of an interview by Trevor Noah of Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) and current adviser to the U.S. President on the Covid 19 pandemic. (This video is from earlier on in the pandemic, when most U.S. states and local governments were beginning to implement stay-at-home orders, social distancing requirements/guidelines, etc.) How does the Covid 19 pandemic and actions taken/requested of individuals to reduce its spread connect and overlap with these concepts (free will, consent to be governed, and responsibilities of rulers), and what do you think these various historical figures would have to say about this?

You will need to consider the resources related to Rousseau's concept of the Social Contract and/or Rousseau's Discourse on Inequality (Enlightenment readings, in source reader or module) along with the Hobbes and Locke sources (Chapter 16 documents)) to fully address this question. Please review the grading rubric.

****Please note that this is not a discussion of whether we should be/should have been under stay-at-home/quarantine rules or orders and this is also not an exploration of

conspiracy theories. This is an assignment to connect a current situation with concepts that we have just recently studied. You need to engage the listed resources to effectively address this prompt.****

3) SHORT ESSAY--20 points. Three or more paragraphs. Review the first three primary source documents/resources within the Launchpad for chapter 17 (the Equiano document, A Sober and Wholesome Drink, and Family at Tea), and also consider the textbook and other resources provided within Module Four (map and video link). What do these documents reveal about late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Europeans and their customs? In what ways were these customs a direct product of the European expansion of trade and the colonial plantation economy? (This question has been adapted from the comparative questions within the Launchpad.) Please review the grading rubric.
