Essay 1 Question: The coming of the Civil War has been a hotly contested issue since the beginning of the war itself and it continues to be so up to our present day. This week we viewed four films: the first a major PBS documentary by Ken Burns (1990), then three Hollywood films that presented contrasting views of America in the decades proceeding the Civil War. We also read a short introductory overview of the war and its various interpretations. We likewise read four chapters of primary documents that presented a variety of contemporary views that contrasted sharply over the description of the North and South, slavery, and why the country tore itself apart in war. In this essay, you will need to make an argument explaining the reasons for the outbreak of the Civil War, as well as make an assessment of how well you think the documentary and Hollywood films have presented that argument to the American public. In your essay, you will need to include material from at least three of our films, as well as use evidence from at least four documents or essays found in at least two of our chapters. In other words, you need to include material from at least three films AND at least four documents from at least two chapters in our book. Put the page number for all quotations in parentheses after your quote. You will need to include a short description of the historical arguments (and not simply plot summaries) conveyed in the films you have chosen. You should compare and contrast the arguments made in these films and explain why they may or may not be different. If you choose you can discuss the different purposes of a documentary and a Hollywood film. Or, you might want to discuss what effect the vast gap between our films’ dates of production had on their historical messages. Any comparison you wish to make is fine. You will also need to assess the historical accuracy of these films by comparing them with the viewpoints expressed in our documents. You must remember that not all of these documents were entirely accurate. Many were made for political purposes or were personal opinions. Still, you will need to discuss what you believe to be the historical accuracy of the films you are including in your essay and why you believe or question their accuracy. * You will then conclude your essay with a restatement of your argument explaining the main reasons for the outbreak of the war, as well as your assessment of how well you think Hollywood has presented that argument to the American public. * And, you must defend your argument using the materials we have both viewed AND read during this past week. This includes explaining the historical argument of your chosen films and assessing their historical accuracy according to our contemporary documents. You can also include other items in our book (like the introductions or essays in each chapter) to support your argument. DO NOT bring in outside information for this essay. You will be able to earn an “A” grade by simply using the material from this course. Your essay is due on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 3pm.
