Test #1 Instructions

The first test will be released on the “Assignments” tab on Tuesday 25 May at

12am and will be due on Sunday 30 May at 11.55pm. Therefore, you will have

almost 144 hours to write and edit your answers, but the test is designed to take a

few hours to complete.

As this test is asynchronous (flexible and untimed), no further accommodations are

required. However, let me know if you will have problems completing the test.

Please write your answers in a Word or Pages file, and submit this file through the

“Assignments” tab. The test will be scanned by Turnitin. Please review the course

syllabus for the History Department’s Policy Concerning Plagiarism.

The minimum length for each answer is 500 words; the maximum is 2000 words.

Use your time to edit and re-organize your work (however, I am not grading

spelling or grammar).

Use lecture notes, course readings, and supplementary materials to support your

arguments. Lectures do not need to be cited, but other sources require citations

(either in-text citations or footnotes).

I am looking for answers that are comprehensive, well-argued, and well-organized:

• comprehensive: use your time to find examples from throughout the course

• well-argued: use information and examples from the course to support your arguments; avoid unsupported personal opinions

• well-organized: make sure to have an overall argument to each answer; use paragraphs to organize your thoughts into sections

In grading, I follow Western University’s grade descriptors:

A+ 90-100 One could scarcely expect better from a student at this

level

A 80-89 Superior work which is clearly above average

B 70-79 Good work, meeting all requirements, and eminently

satisfactory

C 60-69 Competent work, meeting requirements

D 50-59 Fair work, minimally acceptable

F below 50 Fail
