Madeline Hunter Lesson Design - Defined
Anticipatory Set (focus) |
A short activity related to the objective that grabs the students’ attention. It is used to motivate the students, access, and/or build background knowledge.
Objective |
The TEK (objective) and what the students will know and be able to do as a result of their learning. This may include the teacher’s discussion of the purpose of the lesson and why students need to learn the material. |
Input |
Instruction including vocabulary, skills, processes, and concepts the teacher will teach the students in order for them to be successful. |
Modeling (I do) |
Teacher demonstrating or “showing” the students what they will be asked to do with the new information they learned during input. This usually involves the teacher working toward the completion of a product and explaining the process or “thinking aloud” along the way. |
Checking for Understanding |
Teacher using a variety of strategies to determine the understanding of all students as it relates to the skill being taught and demonstrated. Teacher uses this information to adjust lesson pace accordingly. |
Guided Practice (We do) |
Teacher guiding the students and supervising them through the steps necessary to perform the skill(s) and continuing to show the students how to successfully complete the work as they attempt to do it. |
Independent Practice (You do) |
Teacher allowing students to continue practicing the skill on their own using what they have just learned and offering assistance only if necessary. |
Closure |
Reviewing or wrapping-up the lesson that requires students to actively show their ability to synthesize what they have learned. |
