art history term paper
TERM PAPER ASSIGNMENT
Length: 6-8 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman
HOW HAS THE FIELD OF ART CONTINUED TO EXPAND?
Writing at a time when traditional terms associated with art practice and reception seemed to be insufficient to describe contemporary art, art historian Rosalind Krauss responded with the concept of the “expanded field.” Using the idea of the “expanded field” as a starting point, please select and discuss the work of one artist from the list below, and discuss how they do or do not challenge traditional categories of art. Categories to consider include medium, authorship, distribution, reception, and others. However, not all works of art necessarily deal with all of these facets. *(If you would like to write about an artist not included below, please contact the professor for approval in advance.) This assignment is open, in order to allow you to explore the work of an artist who interests you. Please feel free to consult with the instructor while you prepare your assignment. Your final paper should include a clear thesis statement and be well organized and articulate. This is a research paper and as such your bibliography should have at least 5 academic sources, including books, articles, and no more than 1 web source.
Note: Journal articles located through library databases (such as JSTOR or Bibliography of the History of Art) do not count as a web source. Please use a proper citation method (ie. Chicago Manual of Style). Do not write a mini-biography of the artist. This is intended to be a critical exercise and your argument should be driven by the artwork.
Grading:
You will be graded on content (what you say) as well as on writing style (how you say it — including correct grammar, spelling, appropriate citation format, and coherent organization of topics). Be sure to proofread your paper closely before turning it in.
Criteria for grading papers will be:
*Overall cohesion, organization and strength of argument
*Visual analysis and critical interpretation
*Writing Skills: clarity, synthesis, and presentation of ideas
*Writing Mechanics: spelling, grammar, and documentation
