Introduction Remove the word “Introduction”

Your essay must start with a hook. A hook is a line that gets the reader’s attention. Hooks may include an interesting fact, a question or a controversial statement. Regardless of its format, the hook should create a level of interest in the reader and also lead into the topic itself. Next you need to introduce the topic of your essay. Do this in 2 to 3 sentences. Once you have explained the general topic state your thesis. Remember, a thesis is a big idea that includes 3 proofs (3 ways to prove your idea is correct).

Body Paragraph One Remove the word “Body Paragraph One”

Your first body paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that includes both your thesis idea and your first proof. After you have stated your topic sentence, continue writing an argumentative paragraph. You are used to doing this because we have written many body paragraphs in class. Make strong statements and use “quotes” from research to back up your ideas. Remember to introduce and integrate your quote, “like this and cite the author, year and page that you found that quote on”(Last Name of Author, Year, p.x). Once you have quoted, always reflect and be sure to tell me what this quote means and why it is significant to you and your argument. You may end your proof paragraph by connecting your main argument back to the thesis of your essay or by hinting at the topic of the next paragraph.

Body Paragraph Two Remove the word “Body Paragraph Two”

Before beginning paragraph two, use a transition word to indicate that you will be writing about another or secondary topic that is connected to your thesis. Now, state your second topic sentence and make sure that it also relates to your thesis. Continue writing a good proof paragraph that uses quotes or paraphrased information. Make sure you are also reflecting on the proof you use. Remember all of your proof paragraphs should have more than one piece of proof, whether that you use a quote or critical thinking skills. When you are finishing the paragraph, provide a sentence that ties the proof and the topic sentence together and links them all to your main thesis.

Body Paragraph Three Remove the word “Body Paragraph Three”

Before beginning paragraph three, use a transition word to indicate that you will be writing about a final proof that helps to prove your thesis. Now, state your third topic sentence and make sure that it also relates to your thesis. Continue writing a good proof paragraph that uses quotes or paraphrased information. Make sure you are also reflecting on the proof you use. When you are finishing the paragraph, provide a sentence that ties the proof and the topic sentence together and links them all to your main thesis.

Conclusion Remove the word conclusion

Your conclusion should restate the thesis, summarize the main ideas or areas of investigation and add concluding ideas, suggestions, recommendations or predictions. Be sure to not simply restate the whole introduction. It is important that you prove something that is a little different while still staying on topic. This can be a short paragraph.

References

Collect all of your reference entries for any and all articles (sources) you used in your essay.

List the sources (articles, books, websites, youtube videos, etc) in alphabetical order. You should also indent the second, third, fourth, etc line of the entry by formatting your paragraph in hanging indent.

Here is an example of the pattern used to create a reference entry for a newspaper source.

Last Name, first initial of author’s first name. (Year of publication). Title of the article. Name of Newspaper. Retrieved from website url.
