Proposed Network

Here I would like to see you discuss how the implementation of DHCP, DNS, WINS, Certificate services will increase the manageability of your network and provide the ability to expand with increasing the cost of system administration. Talk about how DHCP will provide the IP addressing for your end-user systems. DNS being used on the internal portion of your network will allow you to resolve internal names to IP and can be feed by your DHCP for visibility into what is connected to your internal network. Internal DNS can also be used to forward requests to an external DNS for increased security. Certificates are used for authentication and encryption aspects. This will be important to secure web transactions.

Network Design

This section I am interested in where you are going to place the servers or appliances hosting the DHCP, DNS, Certificate Services and WINS in relation to the routers, firewalls, and end-users. The PDF (in unit two learning materials) DNS DHCP Best Practices discusses the placement of these services and the reasons behind it. Review the document and use your understanding and perspective of your organizations needs to place the services on your network. One of the reasons we place these services in security zones is to allow us to place ACLS and policies to provide additional protection.

Installation and Configuration

In this section I want you to discuss how to install DHCP, DNS, and remote access on a Windows server using roles. The second aspect is how you are going to set up the scope for DHCP. (This is where you create the address assignments for the different parts of your organization). DNS Zones are the naming conventions for the different parts of your organization and remote access is where you are determining who will have privileges to use remote access and if there are limitations on those privileges.

There is a document in the unit three learning materials that describes the steps and considerations for setting up the DHCP for an organization. Use this as a bases of how to approach your organization.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting

This section is going to be focused on the maintenance, monitoring, and troubleshooting of DHCP, DNS, and remote access services. I am looking for you to describe maintenance you will perform on the server hosting the services as well as maintenance related to the services as well. There is a check list that describes areas to think about in the learning material for unit four.

Monitoring we are looking at the system and audit logs created by the services and servers and how we use these to correlate incidents and to help troubleshoot or prevent issues from occurring.

Troubleshooting is looking at problems that can occur if these services fail and how you will identify the problem. The Windows trouble shooting document is a real good source for this portion of the task.
