Mechanics Design In this section you need to provide details for all of your included game mechanics. The expectation is that all mechanics are detailed so that there can be no misunderstandings. It is recommended that you focus on a smaller game than a larger one

Gameplay Genre What gameplay genre does your game fall into (FPS, Action, Puzzle, etc.). No justification needed only the genre itself.

[Write Here]

Game Goals What are the overall goals and objectives within your game? These should be broken down into a hierarchy with each subsequent level leading into next. This is also known as the hierarchy of challenges discussed in the Week 5 Pre-Class activities

Game Challenges/Goal: The top level challenge to beat the game (save the world, etc.)

[Write Here]

Level Challenges/Goal: Individual level or section challenges that move towards completing the game goal

[Write Here]

Sub-Level Challenges/Goal: Series of challenges / goals within a level or section that are required to complete that level

[Write Here]

Atomic Challenges/Goal: Series of challenges / goals that must be completed to complete a sub-level goal

Game Mechanics In this subsection you need to define and outline every single mechanic present within your game. This should be broken down into the categories of mechanics that Jesse Schell outlines (Week 5 Pre-Class).

[Write Here]

Space For this section you want to discuss any mechanics relating to the space that the game takes place in. This can include such as whether or not the game is 2D/3D, how the space works (continuous, discrete) and any limitations on movement.

[Write Here]

Time For this section discuss time related mechanics. This can be stuff such as how time flows in the game, is it turn-based… etc.

[Write Here]

Objects, Attributes & States For this section outline every object present within the game world, their attributes and states. This includes things like the player character, enemy characters and any items of props within the game. You can include tables for attributes and information where it assists in formatting

[Write Here]

Actions In the actions setting discuss all actions the player can take within the game. These would include movement, attacks, skills, etc. Make sure to include both base actions AND strategic actions

[Write Here]

Rules In this section you need to outline explicit rules for how the gameplay works. This does NOT need to be paper prototype-able but should be concrete enough so that people can read them and understand exactly how your game works.

3

[Write Here]

Skills For this section outline the player skills that are expected from the player. These should tie into the challenges that your player will be completing to win the game.

[Write Here]

Chance In chance you want to discuss all chance related mechanics within the game. If there is ever anything that is random or has variance it should be mentioned here. Dice rolls, percentage changes, etc all count as chance based mechanics

[Write Here]

4

Level Design In this section you need to provide details for each of your two constructed levels. These should individually include a drawing of the level layout, descriptions and explaining how the mechanics from the previous section are used within the levels

Level Design 1

Drawing of Level Include a full drawing of your level design making sure to include start & end locations, movement directions, landmarks and challenges present within the level

[Drawing Here]

Level Description For this section provide a description of the level design with discussion of goals and challenges within the level. These should be broken down from level goal into micro goals

[Write Here]

Mechanics Present In this section discuss each of the mechanics that are demonstrated within the level. These should tie into the challenges the level presents.

Critical Analysis In this section you need to go over the theory you have put into practice within your design. This includes the challenges used and the player skill required. A discussion of how you have handled balancing to avoid dominant strategies. A discussion of the level layouts used and how the landmarks guide the player through the space. How difficulty and flow are managed with a discussion on each of the three types of difficulty. A discussion on how your game fits the genre conventions chosen. Each part should be between 200 - 400 words long.

Challenges and Player Skill: For this section discuss the challenges used and the player skill required. These should align with the chosen genre

[Write Here]

Balancing: Discuss how you have handled balancing to avoid dominant strategies. Include direct discussions of dominant and recessive strategies discovered and eliminated.

[Write Here]

Level Layouts: Discuss what level layouts have been used for each of your two levels and why these have been chosen. Discuss how the landmarks in each level help guide the player through the challenges to complete the level.

[Write Here]

Diculty and ‘Flow’: How difficulty and flow are managed with a discussion on each of the three types of difficulty; absolute, relative and perceived. Discuss how challenges have been structured to gradually increase the absolute difficulty level to keep players within the flow zone.

[Write Here]

Genre Conventions: Discuss how your game mechanics conform to your chosen genre’s conventions.
