And to repeat from the syllabus ....
Writing a research paper is the foundation of any thesis paper/scholarly article/publication. Therefore, it should reflect appropriate undergraduate-level research and writing competence, and references should be drawn from widely respected sources and appropriately and objectively authoritative. Although Wikipedia is a handy starting point, it is not authoritative for the purposes of this course nor is it necessarily appropriate for undergraduate scholastic research – as such, unless you’re writing about Wikipedia, using Wikipedia as a source will result in a penalty on your paper. However, sources such as government policies and guidance (nist.gov, dhs.gov, etc.), prominent professional organizations (cert.org, etc.), peer reviewed scholarly articles (IEEE, ACM, etc.), well-established news sources, and industry articles/books generally are considered authoritative references by the profession. Internet documents, articles and blog posts may be appropriate sources depending on how they are incorporated into your work. If in doubt, ask!
