Technology and Dating Article
Introduction
Over the years, the rapid growth of technology has brought some effects with it that has impacted people positively or negatively. Through the introduction of technology system many individuals social life has been affected seriously. People now days spend more time in the internet than before browsing. Even in work places due to cheap bundles and Wi-Fi system has caused many individuals to keep themselves busy. Therefore they don’t have time for social life with people, thus affecting their dating life. Technology and dating have a big connection such that you can’t have a good dating life when you’re addicted to technology. This generation of digital lifestyle has made people become more addicted to the internet than never before. Thus it raised an issue in the government of how to prevent further damage on our youths concerning technology. Therefore in this paper, I will examine and discuss the article on technology and dating from the perspective of four classical theories.
Technology has been abused over the years and through it negative impact has been seeing in respect to dating and courtship. Privacy and security has been breached through Facebook and whatsapp. Therefore through the four theoretical perspective analysis such as utilitarianism, deontology, virtue and contract we are able to understand how technology has influenced social relationships especially in terms of dating and courtship. The article on technology and dating shows how a young girl’s life has been negatively influenced by technology. Her dating life has been influenced therefore she has stayed single for long, (Deech, R. 2013).
The Utilitarian doctrine
The Utilitarian doctrine states that an act displayed by individual is right as long as it benefits majority of people. Therefore from a utilitarian perspective, technology of the article is vied as an act morally permissible due to majority of people has gotten happy through the introduction of technology. The Utilitarian perspective is based on the promotion of happiness (Tavani, 2013. p.54). The issue of technology on dating is significant to the couples because it will help them get connected anywhere and at anytime. This makes both of them have time for one another and therefore making them happy. However, just because something makes the majority happy it does not make it morally permissible. The alliance and approval of an act should not be based on how many people perceive it as right but must be judged on the basis of moral soundness. Breaching of your partner’s privacy through Facebook is it permissible to the other partner. Many couples have separated because of the reason of interfering with their privacy. Although it helps people in communication it can also affect the relationships of people. When a partner refuses to pick calls a negative thought can be triggered which eventually might cause damage. Therefore a utilitarian would have to consider that the best act of dating is by restricting addiction of social media during dating provided the content illegally.
The virtue theory
The virtue theory is an ethical perspective that focuses on the notion that the disposition to doing the correct thing is more impactful than rather having a set of rules and laws that people follow, and our acts should not be based on an introspective but out of habits. As a virtue ethicist, you could argue that technology dating is for personal enjoyment, therefore it is considered morally sound. However, virtue perspective can view it differently in the essence of privacy intrusion, which is not morally sound. Using technology as an advantage of monitoring your partner and using it for communication can be considered moral by people but have all a different perspective, (Annas, J. 2009).
A major problem with the virtue theory is the difficulty of establishing the nature of the virtues, especially as different people, cultures and societies often have vastly different opinions on what constitutes a virtue. The central consideration for virtue ethics is the character of the person but does not take into account the various cultures and societies and the various character traits promoted and celebrated. In some countries the perspective of technology and dating privacy can be seen as breaking a law while others is accepted like United States.
Contract Perspective
According to contract theory the moral and political responsibility of a person are dependent upon an agreement among them to form the community they stay in. The community is governed by laws which must be followed in order to live with others in peace and harmony. Breaking of the set rules may trigger a negative consequence which will serves as a legal right to doing the ‘wrong thing’. For instance, when a person steals, rapes, or do an accident is it illegal. Therefore a contract theory bases its fundamental moral compass on this rules and guidelines. Therefore intrusion of once privacy is illegal and it cannot be allowed morally permissible just because he or she is your fiancé. The couples should be following the rules of engagement till they are legally married.
Rules and regulation are formed so as to help people behave morally sound whether your in your own country or not. Therefore it’s once obligation to find it morally acceptable even though you may have a different opinion or view about the issue, thus your motivation for morality was reliant on the explicit rules or laws. Dating an addict of technology can be hectic and tragedy, thus it is upon once duty to be obliged to the responsibility.
Deontology Perspective
This ethnical theory focuses on rightness or wrongness of once actions as opposed to the rightness or wrongness of consequentialism action of the actor, (Forester & Morrison, 2001) and breaching of once privacy will always be immoral because as a deontologist they follow rules and regulations as everyone else. Thus breaching of once privacy is an unlawful act. If we ‘make exceptions for ourselves, we violate the principle of impartiality’ (Tavani, 2013), which is one of the main principles of the deontological ethical theory. According to Rosa is that everyone has a primary duty to follow such as justice. A deontologist would always find intruding of privacy a morally corrupt as it can violet once motive onto one. As Kant theory of ethics shows that an action of one person should be based on doing the right thing while considering its consequences. Therefore as a person who is dating should consider the effect of technology on your relationship, (Bayer, P. 2017).
In conclusion, from the above paper its evident technology and dating are correlated in a way. Through the four theoretical perspective couples are able to understand their boundaries and limitations concerning privacy. The Utilitarian doctrine gives a perspective that an act displayed by individual is right as long as it benefits majority of people. Couples should rely on the act that on what will benefit both parties. This theory helps us to figure out the right to do things as per the give rules and laws of the country irrespective of once opinion.
