Introduction

When starting a new project, all members of the group must be able to give insight on the project and create useful planning strategies to make sure the final product hits all budget and deadline concerns. The project initiation phase is the first phase within the project management life cycle, as it involves starting up a new project. Within the initiation phase, the business problem or opportunity is identified, a solution is defined, a project is formed, and a project team is appointed to build and deliver the solution to the customer (Watt, para 1).

In this project, the focal point is renovating the kitchen. Focusing on complying with all guidelines, while delivering exceptional work, and maintaining within the budget delegated. This will explain project scope as well as give a detailed WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) in order to plan wisely for the project. Work Breakdown Structures are the pillar of project success (Mathis, n.d.). At its conclusion, the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) will depict all aspects of the intended renovation required for the designated areas of property including tasks needed, durations of tasks, resources and costs breakdown. The renovation will include all new flooring, cabinets, tiling, lighting, a new sink, and appliances. Multiple vendors, contractor, and subcontractors are needed to expedite this process. Staying within the time allocated will be one of the top priorities as well. The scope, as designed, includes only the renovation of the surface level kitchen area. Any and all areas of the residence outside of the kitchen will be considered out of scope. The surface level of the kitchen extends exclusively to cabinetry, appliances, drywall and exposed plumbing with the exception of a single water supply line. Structural integrity issues discovered during the course of this project will be considered out of scope. Upon completion, all inspectors will have been contacted to ensure all aspects are in compliance. Lastly, the finale is assuring that they are satisfied with the finished product or the newly renovated kitchen.

Project Scope

Scope, as defined in project management, is the inclusion or exclusion of deliverables for a project (How to define the scope of a project, 2018). This project is being undertaken for the purpose of enhancing the aesthetic and functional operations of the homeowners’ kitchen with a corresponding increase in the value of the property. This project will include labor and design consisting of the completion of the following tasks:

· Removal of the existing appliances.

· Demolition and removal of the existing cabinetry, flooring, countertops, sink basin and faucet.

· Repositioning of the water supply line for the new refrigerator.

· Painting of the kitchen walls.

· Replacement of kitchen flooring.

· Installation of selected cabinetry.

· Installation of selected countertops.

· Installation of selected sink basin and faucet and appliances

· Compliance with city ordinances for electrical and plumbing installation.

· Full operational functionality of all installed materials as intended by design.

Project limits are within the following constraints:

· Must be completed under the $30,000 budget mark.

· Must be completed within given 90 day time frame.

· Must not interfere with compliance with HOA bylaws

· Must not impede on the functionality of other living spaces

Items outside of scope are matters where the project management team cannot and will not compose or produce deliverables (Watt, 2014). The project management team will not remove, reinforce or alter any structurally load-bearing walls. Conflicts with the HOA resulting from client approved designs will be the responsibility of the homeowners. Existing damages or compliance/ ordinance violations discovered during the demolition or installation process will not be included within the existing project as established. Arrangements for storage or repair of existing appliances rest with the client / homeowner and will not be considered as a part of the established project.

Summary

In conclusion, the scope of the project and WBS have been composed to itemize the steps and structure of the intended project. The scope has been defined as having strict outlines for what work may and may not be included as a part of the existing project. The renovation will include only the replacement and refinishing of items located in the kitchen of the residence. All areas outside of the designated work zone are considered outside of this project. Inevitably, scope creep can occur and mitigation strategies will be identified and employed by the designated team members to remain within compliance to the intended schedule, stakeholder’s needs and overall vision. Understanding the finances, operations, and expenses of the business are among the skills that project managers learn and practice (Watt, para 5). These skills will aid in facilitating the satisfactory completion of the project as laid out in the design phase.
