Spelling and Word Assessments
Complete each of the following assessments with your case study student.
Read the directions carefully for each assessment.
MAKE SURE that you have all materials copied and ready before you begin!
Monitor the behavior of the student. If the student seems fatigued, complete the next assessment on another day.
What you will submit:
You will submit:
Completed CORE Phonics Inventory Record Form, including the final two questions. Determine level: Benchmark, Strategic, or Intensive.
Completed Dolch Sight Word List Teacher Version
Completed Elementary Spelling Inventory Feature Guide or Upper Level Spelling Inventory Feature Guide. Determine stage based on feature guide.
CORE Phonics Inventory- Directions

Dolch Sight Word Lists- Directions
Teacher Version and How to Score:
Place a checkmark for correctly pronouncing word in 1 second or less
NOTE: If the student takes more than 1 second to pronounce or sound out the word, the word should NOT be counted as correct (i.e., the student doesn’t know it by sight).
If the student misses about half the words on a given list, you should stop.
Student Version: Fold the paper or cut the lists so the student is viewing only one list at a time. You may also consider using a notecard to keep the student on track.
Elementary or Upper Level Spelling Inventory-Directions
Have the list of words from your selected inventory.
SAY: “I am going to ask you to spell some words. Spell them the best you can. Some of the words will be easy to spell; some may be difficult. When you do not know how to spell the word, spell it the best you can.”
Give the child a blank piece of paper.
Call each word aloud and repeat it.
Say each word naturally, without emphasizing phonemes or syllables.
Use it in a sentence, if necessary.
STOP after the student has misspelled 5-6 words.

Upper-Level Spelling Inventory (USI) The Upper-Level Spelling Inventory (USI) can be used in upper elementary, middle, high school, and postsecondary classrooms. The 31 words are ordered by difficulty to sample features of the within word pattern to derivational relations spelling stages. With normally achieving students, you can administer the entire list, but you may stop when students misspell more than eight words and are experiencing noticeable frustration. If any students misspell five of the first eight words, use the ESI to more accurately iden- tify within word pattern features that need instruction.
