Research child welfare services in states across the country. Find one that is particularly more successful at meeting children's needs than others. In what ways does their child welfare system differ from the state where you live? Which practices would you like to see implemented in your state? This was the question we had to response to
Breanna Williams
Each state must comply with federal regulations however the framework for child welfare services varies from state to state. Alabama, New Hampshire, and Oregon are ranked three of the highest states with the most successful child welfare systems (Casey Family Programs, 2021). Each of these states has reported a high percentage of children who did not experience a repeat occurrence of maltreatment within six months of the initial investigation. Alabama does not have a separate family preservation policy that is found through various other states, instead, they incorporate it within their approach to child safety. Another aspect that Alabama excels in is its initiative for training in child-related services. New York state has a focus on mandated reporters and training people on how to react in cases where abuse and neglect are suspected. Looking through the New York State Office of Children and Family Services there are numerous articles and pages dedicated to this, and a few related to child abuse, finding childcare, and adoption/foster care. Alabama on the other hand has numerous resources for child welfare services that are provided such as the Fatherhood Initiative, Adoption services, Baby Box Initiative, Chafee Education and Training Voucher Program, D.R.E.A.M. Council, and much more. The D.R.E.A.M. Council is something I would like to see implemented in New York. According to the Alabama Department of Human Resources (n.d.), this council provides the youth with a way to voice their opinion, to take control of their lives, and to be a positive role model for all youth. This practice allows for children and young members of society to feel empowered and motivated to live their best lives, as well as help, protect other members of their community in a safe manner.
