TEACHER INFORMATION:

*This week, you will be completing the following assignment(s): Aligning Standards and Learning Objectives

Instruction is based on academic standards and aligned to learning objectives. Accurate alignment will guide your lesson planning and enhance student academic success.

As teachers, you will constantly evaluate lesson plans for alignment between academic standards and objectives. This assignment provides the opportunity to practice aligning learning objectives to academic standards.

Part 1: Lesson Plan Analysis

Review the "COE Lesson Plan Example" located in Topic Materials. On the "Aligning Standards and Learning Objectives" template, write 250-500 words, responding to the following prompts, as they relate to the lesson plan.  You need to put the required GCU heading for your name, date, course, etc. in the top left corner (see example). These questions are to be answered BASED OFF THE EXAMPLE PLAN BY LARRY LOPE. Please respond to these prompts in question/answer format. Clear and concise writing is expected, as is academic writing and complete sentences.

The first two questions are basically cut and paste from the lesson plan. The last three questions are your thoughts. The assignment is determining if you can read/understand/evaluate a lesson plan.

Your LopesWrite score may be higher on this assignment. Just review your report and submit if those questions or the standard is the reason. I will make note of it in return if that was the cause and no points will be deducted.

· What is the academic standard?  Please write both the standard number and description. This will only be 1-2 sentences.

· What is the learning objective?  Again, this may be short answer, 1-2 sentences.

· Are the standard and objective aligned? How do you know? Provide a rationale.  This should be a complete, detailed paragraph (approximately 100 words).

· What is the lesson about? What does this lesson cover?  This should be a complete, detailed paragraph (approximately 100 words).

· Do the assessments effectively measure the academic standard and learning objective? Justify your response.  This should be a complete, detailed paragraph (approximately 100 words).

Part 2: Unwrapping the Standards

Below your analysis, complete the template by selecting a grade level K-8 and an Arizona K-12 academic standard (different from the one provided in Part 1).  This will be a standard that YOU select from your state standards - it does not have to be AZ. Please use an ELA or Math standard. Provide your state and link as well. This is the standard you will eventually develop your full lesson on, so select it with that in mind. I am happy to preview your standard and give your guidance if you would like; please reach out via individual forum or by phone if you'd like.

· Write three objectives aligned to the standard selected following the Know, Understand, and Do guidelines.  Please review the resources on how to write a learning objective. THE EXAMPLE ASSIGNMENT I HAVE PROVIDED FOR YOU DIRECTLY WALKS YOU THROUGH EACH OF THESE OBJECTIVES.

· For each objective, write a rationale supporting how the standard and objective are properly aligned.  In past courses, this is a step often overlooked. Please be sure to write your rationale.  If you do not provide a rationale, it is an automatic insufficient grade according to the rubric.

· Write a summary of a lesson that could teach the objectives created.  I should be able to get an idea of what will happen in the lesson as a whole. This should be 4-6 sentences.

While GCU format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using GCU documentation guidelines, which can be found in the GCU Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. Refer to the LopesWrite Technical Support articles for assistance.

Please reach out should you have any questions or need any assistance!

Blessings for a wonderful week,

Brenna

My question and answer with my grade info:

Identify what the academic K-12 standards are named/called in your state. Share the link to your state’s standards, grade level, subject area, and academic standard you are considering for the Topic 2 assignment and why you chose it.

The academic K-12 standards for the state of Texas as called TEKS. TEKS stands for, “Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. The TEKS is the standards and knowledge that every student should learn. The link for Texas standards is https://tea.texas.gov/academics/curriculum-standards/teks/texas-essential-knowledge-and-skills . I am considering teaching the second-grade math and science. Once you click on the provided link, you scroll down and fine the second-grade. I chose the second grade because I feel that is when you can catch anything that the students missed in the lower grade before they hit third grade and the work becomes demanding and they must take the standardize test to move on.
