Once you have selected your qualitative and quantitative research studies for this week's assignment, you'll need to write an abstract of each.  Here's the hardest part:  these articles will likely already have an abstract and you cannot copy them.  You need to read the whole article and then provide an abstract.

An abstract is about 200 words.  You can put both on the same paper or you can submit a paper for each, it is your choice.  I recommend a title page and then the qualitative abstract on one page and the quantitative on the another page, all submitted together. 

There is information in your APA manual how to do an abstract.  I recommend having it all in one paragraph with the reference listing for the article being abstracted at the top of the paragraph, like this (exemplar in italics below, but you won't use italics):

Author/s, (date), Title, Journal, Volume(Issue), pages. doi number.  

Writing abstracts for research articles is a challenge for nursing students.  Author/s presented a quantitative study using quasi-experimental methodology with the purpose of determining how nursing students' performance is influenced by exemplars provided prior to assignment completion.  102 nursing students from one university setting, all enrolled in a nursing research online course, comprised the sample.  Nursing students were assigned to complete a research article abstract and submit the assignment, and were then provided with an exemplar for the assignment and again assigned to complete a research abstract.  Statistical analysis results indicated that having an exemplar is associated with improved performance on the ability to present a research abstract.  Nursing faculty might use this evidence to assist nursing students in their ability to complete a research abstract assignment. 

This is the only time you will put the reference listing at the top of the assignment.
