You will be looking for biographical (about the person) and critical information (about the person's work) on your author using one “open access” website (something you would reach by “Googling” it) Try locating a source that are within the last ten years. You are not finding something about the individual story you read, but rather more about the author as a whole and his/her body of work.
You may also consult the authors’ own websites, if they have one.
Now that you have your source, here is what you need to do:
For this assignment, you will investigate an author’s background and the author’s body of work and/or themes within the body of work. What might you infer about possible connections between the author’s background and the author’s work? To what extent does your research inform your reading of this week’s assigned story by that author?
Example: Ernest Hemingway, a well-known twentieth century writer, grew up hunting and fishing and spent his early adult years as an ex-patriot—travelling all over Europe, working as a war correspondent, and as an ambulance driver in World War I. This background explains his almost journalistic style and why many of his stories are set outdoors and overseas and focus on war, death, bull fighting, etc. . . .
Suggested length: 2-3 paragraphs, 500-750 words
Use at least one quote from one of your sources in your writing. Whatever quote you use must be under four typed lines (no long, block indented quotes on this short assignment). Be sure to cite information from your sources whether you quote directly, summarize, or paraphrase. Include a Works Cited page using correct MLA 8th ed. format.
