Monitoring tools for handwashing

Hand hygiene is a global and vital practice aimed at preventing infections in all healthcare settings. Monitoring hand hygiene compliance varies from simple methods like direct observation and product usage to highly advanced tools such as automated electronic monitoring systems. Compliance with handwashing amongst health workers is suboptimal. The reasons why there is non-compliance with hand hygiene have been evaluated extensively where they have reflected busy workflows, lack of availability of products, lack of knowledge of indications, and skin irritation as a result of the repeated use of products. (ZULFAKAR, 2020)

Some of the tools used to monitor handwashing include Direct hand hygiene monitoring, monitoring hand hygiene by-product usage, automated hand hygiene monitoring system.

Direct observation hand hygiene monitoring.

The World Health Organization has recommended direct observation of hand hygiene to monitor hand hygiene as it is a simple and inexpensive method for assessing compliance. To ensure that there is consistency and standardization in observation measures, there should be well trained and validated observers who are well versed in the institution's well laid down methodologies for evaluation of hand hygiene compliance. Trained observers need to be unobtrusive in the fast-paced healthcare setting; these observers must also position themselves in a typical way to observe the hand hygiene practice accurately. Such observers are required to document the number of hand hygiene events and hand hygiene opportunities to calculate the compliance data. The World Health Organization has provided a standardized tool for calculating hand hygiene opportunities which are so far effective in several institutions as it has reduced overestimation of opportunities. We are monitoring hand hygiene by product usage.

This is an indirect method of monitoring hand hygiene compliance. Using product usage, hand hygiene is monitored by taking note of the consumption of paper towels, the alcohol-based hand rub, and liquid soap. The usage of all these can be tracked and translated into an estimation of hand hygiene events. According to World Health Organization, hand hygiene events can be defined based on a specific amount of product usage. Monitoring product consumption provides a wider view of hand hygiene practice without the labour intensive efforts of direct observation. Due to the objective nature of product usage monitoring for hand hygiene, it can evade selection, observer and observation biases. Also, depending on the method used in collecting the data, it is feasible to carry out monitoring at a low cost.

We have an automated hand hygiene monitoring system.

Systems are capable of capturing both hand soap and alcohol-based hand rub events. Even though the electronic monitoring systems require large financial and human resource investment, they can assess all hand hygiene events and opportunities in all healthcare centres, as they maintain the capability of providing granular data.

Introduction

Monitoring is a vital aspect of self-care. It helps one to know if they are meeting the recommended treatment goals to keep them healthy. Healthcare providers should ensure that they use appropriate monitoring tools for diabetes management education to enable the patients to manage their level of diabetes appropriately. The information gained from regular monitoring of diabetes level helps people with their self-care in the following ways. First, it helps in problem-solving, like learning how different kinds of food affect the blood glucose level, which is the blood sugar level; this also helps determine when the best timing for adding activity into one's day might be. It helps maintain a healthy eating pattern by knowing when one can have snacks and when such snacks affect one's blood glucose levels. It helps one to keep track of how the medication is working and the impact that any new medications might have.

Diabetic management education involves self-monitoring of blood glucose; while educating diabetic patients in diabetes management education, healthcare providers have to train patients on self-monitoring using the tools used to enhance blood glucose monitoring. Self-monitoring of blood glucose instructions can be offered in various settings by a wide array of healthcare professionals. Self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is a vital aspect of treating all diabetic patients (Beck, 2017). This provides immediate feedback and data that enables people living with diabetes to assess how their food choice, their levels of physical activity and medications affect their control of blood glucose. The tools or skills necessary for a successful self-monitoring of blood glucose include; pedometers, cell phones and wireless devices, glucose tablet holder, food scale, and medical alert ID.

Pedometers

Pedometers are small wearable devices that keep track of all of the steps that diabetes patients take throughout their day. Some of the pedometers are basic counters, but others keep more detailed logs of activity. All of the pedometers help encourage people to move more during the day; this is an important goal in diabetes management. Exercise programs that make use of pedometers may cause increased activity and better blood sugar control.

Cell phones and wireless devices

The existing and emerging technologies like wireless devices such as cell phones and the emails and text messaging functionalities, pagers, and the internet are important in facilitating patient self-management of diabetes. Such devices are practical and are cost-effective tools used in monitoring the clinical outcomes and enhancing the patient's adherence to treatments. The wireless devices can be used as intermediary tools in facilitating information transfer between patients and educators. They can also be used as treatment devices between the visits made in clinics (Greenwood,2017). The use of these devices encourages the patients to follow their monitoring methods as they act as reminders to help them manage their disease independently. Your second compliance issue seems to have been cur in half. Somehow you have been concentrating on the diabetes management education and leaving out that the nurse billed it as an office visit. The entire thing is the compliance concern. It really has nothing to do with diabetes. It’s about understanding the differences in billing practices and billing guidelines.

Additionally, this assignment required an additional part where your break down one of the monitoring tools you’ve selected and provide the procedures for it. As I have mentioned before, you must read the entire instructions for each assignment, listen to the weekly live classroom session and review the rubric to get a better understanding of what is required.
