The Elevator Presentation

Background

Elevator presentations are called that because entrepreneurs used to (and in cases, still do) attend business conferences where they would be likely to find individuals who had the means to invest in their business ideas. They would try to catch private time with these potential investors by riding the elevator with them from the convention floor to their hotel room floor. Typically the investor--now trapped--would give the entrepreneur the time in the elevator ride to make a convincing argument or else the presentation was over. (To get an idea of what this is like, look up the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and go to the scene where Potts tries to pitch his candy (just before the toot sweets musical number).

Now the standard is to have an elevator presentation not only as a way to quickly inform potential investors, and anyone else, but also as a way of demonstrating you truly know what you want to do as well.
