IT Capstone Topic Approval (Task 1)

IT Capstone

Task 1 — Topic Approval Form

Purpose. To confirm a viable topic before Task 2. Approval requires (a) a specific client with a problem solvable by technology, and (b) a hard IT deliverable to be implemented in the client’s environment.

Project basis. Real or fabricated projects are both acceptable. Tasks 1 and 2 are written as a plan; Task 3 is written as a completed report. An outline is sufficient on this form.

1. THE CLIENT AND THE PROBLEM

Identify the client and describe the problem. 2–4 sentences. Example: Company X, a 40-person regional accounting firm, has exposed digital accounts that could allow unauthorized access.

The client is a small business with approximately 25–50 employees that lacks a centralized security monitoring capability. Security events are logged locally on systems but are not collected or analyzed in a central location, making it difficult to detect unauthorized access, malware infections, or other cyber threats before they cause damage.

2. THE IT SOLUTION

Identify the hardware or software to be installed, built, or upgraded as a permanent part of the client’s environment. 2–4 sentences. Examples: MFA rollout, SIEM deployment, cloud migration, network upgrade, POS system, internal web application.

The project will design and implement a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solution within the client environment. The solution will include a Windows Server, centralized log collection from endpoints, alerting capabilities, and testing through simulated security events to improve threat detection and incident response.

3. SUPPORTING SOFT DELIVERABLES (OPTIONAL)

Training, policies, or documentation accompanying the IT solution. Optional.

N/A

4. STUDENT CERTIFICATION

All three questions must be answered before submission.

Do you understand that the project writes about the implementation of a hard IT deliverable for a specific client, and that the project may be real or fabricated?

Yes / No

Does the project involve human-subject research? (If yes, contact the course instructor before submitting.)

Yes / No

Does the project use restricted or proprietary information belonging to an employer or third party? (If yes, also submit the “IT Capstone Project Restricted Information Authorization Form.”)
