Tangram Project

Purpose: In Chapter 6 you have learned about the properties and attributes of various

polygons and quadrilaterals. In this project you will demonstrate your knowledge using

tangram pieces.

Due Date: Sunday, April 18, 2020

What is a tangram?

It is a Chinese geometrical puzzle consisting of a square cut into seven pieces which can be

arranged to make various other shapes.

Directions:

1. Project must be downloaded into a PowerPoint presentation-this includes

scanned documents, pictures and videos.

2. Any graphs need to be clearly labelled, easy to read.

3. Math work must be justified and handwritten neatly.

4. Clearly label each section of your project. Eg. PART 1 a)……

PART 1: Classify Polygons [Concepts and Procedures]

a. Draw the square tangram on a coordinate plane.

Restrictions: the center of the tangram should not be on the origin of the coordinate

plane, parts of it should be in all four quadrants, and the domain and range should

be at least 6 units and at most 18 units.

b. Label each different vertex, starting with A and ending with J.

c. Name each tangram piece by its vertices. For example, ABF. Then find length of each

side. Justify all work.

d. Determine the equation, in slope-intercept form, for each side. Justify all work.

e. Create a separate legend for each side from part d. Eg. Tangram ABD: AB̅̅̅̅ : y = 2.

f. Use these equations and the lengths found in part c and d to classify each of the 7

tangram pieces. Justify your answers.

PART 2: Using Properties and Attributes [Problem Solving]

1. a) Use the 7 tangram pieces to create a trapezoid.

b) Draw the trapezoid on a coordinate plane.

c) Use the properties and attributes of these trapezoids to justify your classification.

2. Create a piece of Geometric Art. Select 1 option ONLY.

OPTION 1:

Create an original art piece using material you find around your home. It must only

include at least 4 of the following shapes: parallelogram, rectangle, square, rhombus,

trapezoid, and kite. In a separate document identify and classify all the different shapes

used in the art piece.

OPTION 2:

a. Use a coordinate plane to create an original design. Do not limit the creation looking

similar to those seen below. The design must include triangles [2 types] and

quadrilaterals [4 types: squares, rectangles, parallelograms, rhombuses, trapezoids or

kites]. Other polygons may be used if needed. The art piece should fit on a piece of A4

paper, with the minimum size of 6 by 6 inches [15 by

15 cm].

b. On the coordinate plane, label the vertices of one of

each type of triangle and quadrilateral in the design.

Then name and classify the shape using their

properties and attributes. Justify all answers, similar

to what was done with the tangram pieces in PART 1.

c. Transfer the design without the coordinate plane to a

plain sheet of paper.

PART 3: Kites [Communicate Reasoning]

1. Joe states that he can create a kite using tangram pieces. Kamala disagrees with Joe and

states it is impossible to create a kite. Who is correct? Justify your reasoning.

2. On video, create a trapezoid using the 7 tangram pieces.

a) State what type of trapezoid was created and justify your answers using the

properties of trapezoids.

b) Find the measures of the interior angle and exterior angle at each vertex of the

trapezoid created in part a. Justify all work.
