Taking the quiz for this particular assignment has resurfaced many memories, it is a constant reminder as to why I made the decision to join this field many years ago. There are several reasons why I chose to join the healthcare field to help humanity. Almost half of them is related to incidences in my real life while half of them is related to my own skills and characteristics that makes up my personality. I have many family members that work in the health care field. I remember how my aunt would take me into her office. She wanted me in the setting because she knew my desires of wanting to be a nurse. I remember sitting in the office on a few occasions. I also remember how pleasant and helpful the staff were. Lastly, I remember how grateful the patients were. I was even more convinced this was the career I desired for myself. My Aunt would give them the medications needed to treat their symptoms. Even though the patients were suffering, the biggest thing that I learned from her was that she treated everyone with kindness, love, dignity and respect. I remembered the patients leaving in such a happy mood that I felt like they were almost cured. What motivated me to join this field was the love and compassion for humanity that she instilled in me all those years ago. Another incident that made me join this field was that I was anemic when I was born, for much of my life I had to visit hospitals constantly due to this condition. I was very small at that time but I still remember those days like yesterday. I remember the doctors and nurses who treated me with kindness and I also remember those doctors, healthcare workers, and nurses who weren’t as nice. All of this made me realize that entering this field would enable me to help those who can’t help themselves, and I felt like the main purpose of my life would be fulfilled if I could make a difference in even the life of a single person.

My own personal characteristics and skills also motivated me to enter this field. Even when I was a kid, I remember people telling me that I was a good listener, and that I listen to really understand what’s going on in the mind of the other person and not just to answer. I feel like most people just listen to a conversation to place their own views on the other person, and I feel that that is the most inconsiderate thing to do. When a person is communicating with you, it is expected for you to listen to what he is saying, so that you can assist them reach a conclusion. In the healthcare field, listening to the needs and wants of the patients, and full filling them on time can go a long way. By properly listening to them, you are telling them that they are important and that they matter to you, and this would allow them to trust you more (Kerubo, Nguyo, Odhiambo, and Kangure, 2019). As a result of this, a trusting relationship is created between the patients and the healthcare worker or doctor, and this allows the patient to tell you things that may be an uncomfortable topic. Such honest communication enables healthcare workers and doctors to assist their patients as it allows them a deep understating of the pathophysiology of their symptoms.

This test also helped me remember another important reason for choosing this field. When I was a student, I used to always get low grades in math and numbers. On the other hand, I used to always score high on biology exams, therefore my teachers motivated me to peruse a career in healthcare. Many of them knew that I would struggle in a career where I had to deal with a number of issues, or where I had to apply math formulas. Other than their motivation, I absolutely hated solving math equations or doing algebra, I felt like my brain could not process these formulas for even a day, and hence, therefore, I decided to go with what I am good at, and it was biology and social sciences.

Another good quality that pushed me to pursue a career in healthcare was that I was able to retain every bit of information that I would read. Also, I was always a good public speaker. Everyone knows that you have to cover many subjects in this field in a short amount of time. For some people, it gets exhausting to cover such a large amount of coursework, and syllabus in such a short amount of time. However, it was easy due to my ability to retain even the small bits of information that I would read while going through my class lectures or my coursework. Hence, I knew that it was just the appropriate field for me. Being a public speaker in school, I used to participate in debates at the state levels, and my room is filled with medals that I’ve won. My mother would frequently tell me that I speak with such a soft and convincing tone, that she used to give me whatever I want. I think that possessing a good talking skill is very important in the healthcare field. It enables you to communicate your findings to your patients in a way that they understand so that they can comply with your treatment plan more effectively because compliance is important to ensure the success of their treatment (Richardson et al., 2009).

This quiz also made me realize that I enjoy learning about new cultures and that I have always been able to communicate effectively with them. In the healthcare field, we come across a large number of patients that belong to different cultures, ethnicities, and countries. I feel a person who is open to all cultures, and wants to learn more about them would communicate with his patients in a more open and effective way than someone who lacks an understanding of the cultures, heritages and the uniqueness it instills in the people who live in that particular region or country (Rowe, 2015).

Subsequently, it is understood healthcare field continues to grow each year with new medicine and equipment. These are launched often due to the large amount of research work that is continuously being conducted and published in journals etc. While taking this quiz, I also found that that I enjoyed doing research work and gathering information, and therefore I feel like this is just the right field for me. All of the above-mentioned qualities and characteristics motivate me to pursue a career in this field because they make me believe that I would be good at it, and it would also enable me to help people who are suffering in silence and who need someone to help them.
