WRITING ASSIGNMENT: VISUAL ANALYSIS

DUE 9/22

This is your first “formal” writing assignment of the semester. You do not need to do any research, just apply the tools of formal analysis to your chosen image. You need to write at least 2–3 TYPED pages. These pages should be uploaded to Blackboard in the Visual Analysis assignment.

Choose ONE of the following works of art to discuss in your paper:

1. Mary Cassatt, The Letter, 1891 (figure 8.12 in Artforms)

2. Frida Kahlo, The Two Fridas, 1939 (figure 23.26 in Artforms)

3. Pieter de Hooch, Interior of a Dutch House, 1658 (figure 4.4 in Artforms)

In your first paragraph, briefly describe the subject matter (What do you see? What do you think is happening in this image?). Also, describe the medium (print, painting, etc.)

Next, describe the formal qualities of the composition. You should write about each of the following visual elements and principles of design.

· One to two paragraphs on the visual elements—what choices has the artist made? Why do you think they are important? You can use the following questions as a guide (remember that all might not be relevant to your chosen work):

· What colors are used? How do they relate to each other? Is one color more dominant than the others?

· What mood is conveyed by color?

· Are there geometric shapes? Organic shapes?

· Does the artist use lines to imply a sense of movement or activity? Can you determine whether or not the artist is using contour lines or implied lines?

· Is mass (open or closed form) important to the composition in two dimensions?

· How is space depicted in two dimensions? What kind of perspective is used?

· Are time and motion important in the two-dimensional composition? If so, how are they depicted?

· Does the artist use implied light sources? How can you tell?

· Is there texture, or a tactile quality to the work of art that conveys meaning?

· One to two paragraphs devoted to the principles of design—what choices has the artist made?

· What elements are used to unify the composition? How does variety add visual interest to the composition?

· Does the artist use pattern, repetition, and rhythm, and for what purpose?

· What type of balance do you see: symmetrical, axial, approximate? How is balance achieved?

· Is there a focal point? How is emphasis/subordination employed? Does the artist use directional forces to guide your eyes through the painting? Are there areas of visual contrast?

· How are scale and proportion used to convey meaning?

Finally, your last paragraph should speculate as to what meaning the artist was trying to communicate to his/her audience. You do not need to do any additional research, nor should you copy from the textbook—this is your opinion about the work (i.e. How does the work make you feel? What do you see that makes you say that?).
