Tableau Titanic Exercise

Having read the 15 Titanic facts that were supplied as part of this assignment, you are now asked to report on some of the questions being asked by management of the company.

Disaster/recovery comes in many forms. In this case there was a disaster and we need to run analytics to report on questions being asked. While they didn’t have analytics back when the Titanic sunk, can you imagine doing this today? Every passenger and all their info such as gender, class, age, etc. is kept in a database, making it quite easy for us to pull the information out.

Having gone through the Tableau Lab example and/or previous exercises, you are now ready to complete this assignment.

Launch Tableau from your desktop and import the Excel file supplied with this assignment.

Figure 1.0 – Navigation Menu

1). Select the Excel option from the Navigation Menu (Figure 1.0).

2). Navigate to where you downloaded and saved the Titanic.xlsx file

3). Import the file.

Your data source should now look like this:

1). You will now see the DataSet file as above and will now be able to use this file to complete your exercises.

If you don’t see the data, double click on Sheet1 Titanic, just above the New Union link, left side.

2). Select the Worksheet option (Sheet1) on the bottom left of the Tableau Window. You will now see the following Dimensions and Measures options based on your MS Excel dataset.

EXERCISES:

Be sure to answer questions with both a numerical answer(s), and a screen shot.

ALL screen shots must have your name in them. To accomplish this, double click on the words Sheet 1 as shown below and change it to your name. Use your initials if your name is really long!

No name/initials, no credit!

1. Using a highlight table, how many adults and how many children were on the Titanic? (display a screen shot of your work here)

2. Of these, how many died?

Place a screen shot of your work here.

3. Of these, how many were female? Use a pie chart this time. Be sure to go to Analysis at the top and click on show/mark labels to see the numbers on your pie chart.

4. How many male children survived? Show only the male children that survived. To do this you need to filter your information. Hint: Drag Sex, Survived and Age into the Filters box.

Using a stacked bar chart, place a screen shot of your results here.

5. Now, add in class. How many female crew survived?

Again, using a stacked bar chart, place a screen shot of your results here.

6. Which class had the largest amount of people…..how many?

Using a packed bubble chart, place a screen shot of your results here. Hint, to see the numbers of each class, drag “number of records” to the Label box.

7. Which class had the most survivors….how many?

Still using the packed bubble chart, show a screenshot of your work here.

8. Everyone knows the story of the Titanic. We know that many of the 3rd class passengers were locked into the bottom of the ship. How many 3rd class passengers died?

Place a horizontal bar chart here that shows how many people by class did not survive. (Hint, show all the classes in your chart)
