Synthesis/Research Essay Assignment – (3 Sources)

For this assignment you should draw on the descriptions you generated in your annotated bibliography assignment (attached in another document) . These are the two primary source readings selected on Blackboard and one outside source that you found in your online library. You are are asked to evaluate these texts in relation to one another. The outside source sources should highlight a connective or disparate area, but should not be literary article. These descriptions, however, should not be an end within themselves, but rather can help you cite examples that help justify your argumentative evaluation of the contents. Keep in mind that while your argument should be critical, that does not mean it must adopt a negative tone. Critical synthesis can support multiple writers’ arguments by extending their implication with insight and innovation. Your argument does not need to replicate an existing perspective but should try to invent an idea that shapes attitudes in new ways.

Your evaluation should address the following question: to what extent are these two (or more) works participating in the same conversation? And, how, based on their respective positions, can we develop an overarching conclusion that charts a way forward? Also, note if there is an ethical dilemma in your topic choice. In order to answer these questions successfully, you will need to abstract connections between your sources and explain through analysis and close reading, their relevance to one another.

Questions for consideration:

What is a common problem or issue that both essays address? Why has a solution to the common problem addressed in each essay been developed? How can arguments about seemingly uncommon topics still have relevance to one another and put forth a similar conversation?
