Argument Essay Connecting Raymond Carver’s “Popular Mechanics” & Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” Draft Two.

Your task is to revise the essay which you previously submitted on the two short stories identified above. You must introduce a counterargument and rebuttal that responds to your own thesis. Please review “The Composition Process: (Part III Counterargument and Rebuttal).

In addition, make any of the following revisions that may apply:

· Thesis: If the thesis does not appear before you start to make your argument, adjust it so that it is part of the introduction

· Quotes: If your paper is overloaded with quotes, adjust so that each body paragraph has a ratio of not more than 1/3 quotes to 2/3 your own original writing (which of course will include paraphrasing of ideas from the text)

· Quotes: On the other hand, if you relied entirely on your own opinion to make your argument, go back to the texts and provide quotes for support

· Support: Make sure that you are not imposing an interpretation on the text that you cannot support with evidence from the text. There is nothing wrong with drawing a conclusion about something that is not specifically stated; however, you must be able to demonstrate why your hypothesis is likely

As mentioned with the first draft (yet disregarded by quite a few of you), the key to a successful synthesis, is that you are not writing about the sources (short stories), you are writing about an issue for which your sources provide evidence. Consequently, your thesis should not be about the stories; it should be about whatever you see as connecting the stories (i.e., marriage sucks, marriage is the greatest thing in the world, it is difficult to make a marriage work for very long, etc.).

Your essay must have a header (please refer to Skyline 5 MLA Conventions, which can be found in “Supplemental Resources,” below “My Grades”). Your paper should be approximately three pages, double-spaced, with 12 point plain font (if it is significantly shorter, either it is missing something, or it is under-spaced). Use MLA parenthetical citations to format your quotes (review PowerPoint on MLA formatting), and proper MLA headers.

Create your essay with a word processor (Word is preferable), and then submit it as an attachment. You cannot maintain proper formatting when typing directly. Please take note of the SafeAssign report, which indicates what percentage of your essay may appear to have been plagiarized. This allows you to fix things like uncited quotes.
