Essay 3: Synthesis Essay
A synthesis essay discusses the commentary that two different sources have on a
similar topic. It is not like a compare and contrast essay because mainly the
similarities between the sources are discussed. A compare and contrast essay
focuses on differences within two sources’ arguments or tries to address both the
similarities and differences in their arguments.
Based on the sources provided for you on D2L in Week 8, choose one scholarly
secondary source and one non-scholarly secondary source to write your essay.
Make an argument about what the sources say about their shared topic, and how
they present their arguments and evidence on this topic to readers.
The Essay 3 topics are:
• College Students’ Mental health
• Free College Education
• Self-Driving Cars
You are welcome to discuss rhetorical devices used by the authors such as ethos,
pathos or logos, but you are not required to.
