Syllabus

Course Overview

Welcome to your Capella University online course, 9960 – Dissertation Course.

This course is delivered in the GuidedPath format.

Your dissertation is a culmination of your abilities to apply the skills of an independent researcher, connect theory to practice within your chosen field, and demonstrate your development as a scholar-practitioner. The dissertation process allows you to expand your research skills as you apply the knowledge and expertise you have gained during your course work. The dissertation is also a demonstration of a level of subject and methodological expertise. Completion of a dissertation serves as a public confirmation that you possess the ability to understand the literature in your field, engage in research and critical analysis, communicate effectively, and complete a scholarly project by following through on tasks and meeting deadlines as expected of a doctoral graduate.

The dissertation courseroom is organized around the 11 remaining milestones that are required to complete the dissertation process. Each unit in the courseroom contains specific studies and assignments with due dates that support milestone completion. You will submit assignments via the courseroom to verify milestone progress. At any time during your dissertation, if you encounter an unexpected situation that will prevent you from completing an assignment within the expected time frame, you should contact both your mentor and your advisor.

Course Participation

Begin participating in your courses from the very beginning. Active participation helps keep you from falling behind and gives you the opportunity to fully benefit from the course. You must participate in the course by completing your Plan of Action Form assignment before the end of week 1 of the course and maintain ongoing participation throughout the quarter.

For Initial Course Participation requirements, you must:

Submit your Plan of Acton Form through the u01a1 assignment area by the end of week 1 of the quarter.

For Ongoing Course Participation requirements, you must:

Complete the assignments identified in your Plan of Action Form.

Note: Communicating with an instructor via courseroom mail, in the Ask Your Instructor discussion board, or outside of the courseroom does not count as initial course participation.

Quarterly Plan of Action Form

Each quarter, you will submit a Quarterly Plan of Action Form (PoA Form) outlining your plans for the assignments that you will complete during the quarter. Your mentor will be responsible for reviewing your PoA Form and determining if you are trying to do too much (or not enough). The PoA Form assignment serves three purposes:

1. Submission of the PoA Form assignment each quarter triggers the release of your financial aid.

2. You confirm to your mentor which assignments you will complete for the dissertation quarter.

3. Your mentor will use your PoA Form to evaluate your progress at the end of each quarter.

Week 10 Progress Report and Grading

During the final week of the dissertation quarter, your mentor will review the progress you made in completing your Quarterly PoA Form. Your grade for the course is based on your mentor's evaluation of your progress in accordance with your Quarterly PoA Form. The assignment of a Satisfactory or Not Satisfactory grade will be based on the progress you made on completing the assignments identified in your Quarterly PoA Form.

To receive a "Satisfactory" grade, you must complete all assignments identified in your PoA Form that you and your mentor identified would be completed this quarter. If you did not complete all of the identified assignments, you and your mentor will evaluate your progress to determine your grade for the dissertation quarter. If your mentor determines that you did not make satisfactory progress, your mentor will assign a "Not Satisfactory" grade for the dissertation quarter.

Deadlines for Submitting Your Work for Review and Feedback

At the beginning of each quarter, you will work with your mentor to identify the assignments you will complete in your Quarterly PoA Form. Failure to complete the assignments may result in an NS grade. Keep in mind that the revision process is iterative, and plan accordingly. Be sure to work with your mentor to establish a clear timeline at the start of the quarter and check in with your mentor to make necessary adjustments to your Quarterly PoA Form.

School-Specific Materials

The milestone processes and assignments are the same for all learners across all schools; however, each school has unique requirements. Within each milestone, you will find links to everything you need to complete your dissertation, including school-specific guidebooks, forms, and templates. This courseroom gives you one-stop access to all the information you need to successfully meet your school's requirements for your dissertation.

Milestone Assignments

All of the documentation you need to complete a milestone must be submitted to your mentor through the assignment links in each unit. Each assignment has a scoring guide. This is how your mentor will verify that an assignment has been successfully completed. The materials you will submit for each assignment will vary. For some assignments, you will submit specific work products. All assignments successively contribute to milestone completion.

Private Groups

To obtain feedback and direction, check in with your mentor via the Private Feedback discussion under My Groups.

Saving Your Work

This courseroom is not constant and will reset each quarter. Any milestones you completed during the previous quarter will be updated on your milestone transcript, so you will not need to resubmit verification of already completed milestones each quarter. Since the courseroom does refresh each quarter, it is important that you save your work outside of the courseroom. One way to do this is through the use of an E-Portfolio.
